A big **THANK YOU** to the Mathews Community Foundation for helping Mathews Outdoor Club enhance the runner experience for the 2026 Mathews Marathon, Half Marathon & Relay - the Oct 17th race is only one month away!!

Earlier this year, MOC received funding to make important improvements to our race timing and course signage. Because portions of our course travel along remote rural roads, establishing a second chip timing station required some creative solutions—including a portable Jackery power station, Starlink Mini for WiFi connectivity, and a second chip timing reader.

The funding also allowed us to upgrade and double the number of **Caution Runners** signs along the course. With remaining funds, we were able to purchase mile markers for both the Full and Half Marathon courses.

These improvements will help provide a safer, more professional, and higher-quality experience for runners when they arrive in Mathews County on **October 17**

We are grateful to the Mathews Community Foundation for investing in this event and helping us continue to improve the experience for runners—both this year and for years to come.

You know the feeling by Thursday. Two days off, a full tank, and no desire to plan a thing. The good news is you barely have to. Point the car almost any direction and within a couple of hours you can swap the group chat for a tidal creek, a trout stream, or a lake wide enough to lose the far shore. The seven towns below are the ones made for a quick reset, where a Saturday and a Sunday are enough to slow all the way down and still drive home feeling like you got away. No itinerary required. That is rather the point.

Mathews County has more shoreline than almost any county its size in Virginia, and the tiny courthouse village at its heart is a fine base for using it. The lack of commercial sprawl is the appeal here, since the reward is an unbroken view around most bends in the road. Start at the Bay School Community Arts Center for the rotating gallery, then build a picnic from the local deli and carry it down the East River to Williams Wharf Landing, a spot made for launching a kayak, casting a line, or just watching the light go long toward sunset.

For the night, the Inn at Tabbs Creek has water views on three sides, minutes from the handful of good kitchens on Main and the small Mathews Maritime Museum. Plan around the calendar if you can. The Music on Maple concerts happen a few times a year, and at the Saturday farmers market, one of the longest-running in the area, local growers and makers set up through October. The bigger party at the wharf usually falls in spring.
