Bellbrook, Ohio

The Ohio 9 traveled to the wonderful City of Bellbrook, Ohio for a 9 inning bound match vs the Tippecanoe Canal Jumpers, hosted by the Bellbrook Sugarcreek Park District. The teams had the pleasure of playing in front of several dozen fans in attendance, all willing to brave the warm, muggy conditions to watch an afternoon of vintage base ball, as played by 1864 rules, and to partake in free hot dogs and ice cream.

The 9 welcomed Logan "Short Fry" Keller, and Bob "Boomer" Behr as extra ballists for today's match.

The Canal Jumpers were first to step to the plate, some fine hurling by Jim "Tugboat" Breen kept all four struck balls on the infield, allowing just a single baserunner, and The 9 was able to escape the top of the first unscathed.

"Short Fry" led off the bottom of the first for us, was moved to third on a single to right by William "Elmer" Segrist and scored on a double by Jonathan "Rainman" Goebel. Unfortunate for the 9, we were held to just that one run in the bottom of the first frame. Over the next five innings, the Canal Jumpers scored often and held The 9 to just two runs through the sixth inning, pushing the score to 19-2.

The bats finally came alive for The 9 in the bottom of the seventh inning. Four straight singles by Chris "Butcher" Hunter, Charlie "Sharkbait" Kemp, "Short Fry", and Christian "Boston" Ollson produced a run, and a strong double by Elmer plated two more runs. We weren't done there, singles by Sam "Timber" Spight, "Boomer", Rob "Papa Scoot" Schuster, and "Tugboat" produced four more runs, bringing the inning's total to seven tallies. Things were finally looking up, and we were hoping for a comeback.

However, our bats again fell silent the last two frames, and The Canal Jumpers came out on top by a score of 22 to 9. The match did feature a couple of defensive gems, "Short Fry" made an incredible one-handed 'manly' catch on a dead run in center field. On another play, on a well struck ball to left field, we were able to cut down the striker at the plate with a strong throw from left field by Raymond "Straps" Peining to the cutoff "Rainman" at shortstop, who made another fine throw to the catcher "Sharkbait", who snagged the ball on a bounce to lay down the tag on the sliding baserunner.

Even with a loss, it was a good day of vintage base ball, with lots of laughter and some good-natured ribbing with our friends from Tippecanoe, it's always a pleasure to spend the afternoon on the ball field with them. The Ohio 9 and The Tippecanoe Canal Jumpers would like to thank the City of Bellbrook for the invitation to play ball in their fine town, and to the many fans in attendance.

Our next event is in two weeks, noon Sunday, August 2nd vs these same Tippecanoe Canal Jumpers. This match will be played at our home park at Corwin-Nixon fields in Mason, Ohio. Hope to see you there!

The America 250 Tournament

In honor of the 250th anniversary of the founding of our great Nation, your Ohio 9 hosted the America 250 Tournament at our home field at Corwin Nixon park, located in beautiful Mason, Ohio. Joining us were the Cincinnati Buckeyes, 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings Vintage Base Ball Team, the Dayton Clodbuster Base Ball Club, The German Village Hobnobbers, Indianapolis Blues Vintage Base Ball Club, and the Tippecanoe Canal Jumpers.

The skies threatened most of the morning, but we were able to stay dry for the first two rounds of games and for lunch just after noon. The afternoon weather wasn't as kind, as the skies opened up and produced several rounds of light rain showers. Luckily, the more severe weather passed us to the north and south, so play went uninterrupted. However, wet weather does make playing ball much more interesting, making the balls slicker and therefore more difficult to catch, and also greatly affecting the trajectory of bound balls.

The six teams were separated into two groups, each group playing in round robin fashion to determine who would advance to the championship game, with the Clodbusters and the Indianapolis Blues both coming out on top of their respective groups. The Blues continued their day of strong hitting, aggressive baserunning, and solid defense to best the Clodbusters in seven innings, thereby winning all three matches of their day, and taking home the America 250 Tournament cup.

Today we welcomed Alex "Bucket" Buchheit to the Ohio 9. In addition to serving as curator and public historian for the Mason Historical Society, he also plays Town Ball, a form of base ball which predates 1860s vintage ball.

Overall, it was a good day of base ball, with lots of laughter and camaraderie with friends. The Ohio 9 would like to thank all ballists that came to participate in our tournament, as well as the fans. We also extend a heartfelt thanks to Bill "Pick" Dieckmann for serving as arbiter for three round robin matches as well as the championship game, and to Sara "Mrs Rainman" Goebel for all her help in setting up and serving lunch.

Our next event is noon Sunday, July 19th vs the Tippecanoe Canal Jumpers in Bellbrook, Ohio, at Sackett-Wright park, 3301 SR 725.

Four games on four fields kick off at 10am and a Championship match is schedule for roughly 3pm!

After visiting Bluegrass Barons last weekend, The Ohio 9 headed to Aurora Indiana for a fly-rule nine inning match with the Cincinnati Buckeyes, as part of the city's day of celebrating our great nation's 250th anniversary. Even on a dreary and very humid day, a fine crowd was in attendance, with a few folks in period-correct attire.

The Ohio 9 batted first, and after our first two strikers failed to reach base, the bats came alive with 10 straight singles, eventually scoring 8 tallies with two outs. The bats again went quiet in the second inning, but came back alive, scoring 3 tallies in each the third and fourth innings, then 6 tallies in each the fifth and sixth innings.

Five of our strikers had 6 hits on the day - Ralph "Hobo" Klosterman, Dylan "Scooter" Schuster, William "Elmer" Segrist, Joshua "Axeman" Engel, and Jim "Tugboat" Breen. Hobo and Scooter led the assault, going 6 for 7 with 6 RBIs each, Hobo with 5 doubles. Jonathan "Rainman" Goebel was also productive at the plate, driving in 4 baserunners. Rob "Papa Scoot" Schuster reached base safely in his first 5 plate appearances. We welcomed back Chuck "Wagon" Hungler for his first game with the team this year. Even fighting a stomach bug, Wagon was wasted no time contributing to the effort, going 5 for 6 with 2 RBIs and a double.

Defense was strong all day, with many "manly" outfield catches, and a few turned double plays by the infield, with Sal "Gr***de" Lagonia solid at shortstop.

Many thanks to our hosts, the fine people of Aurora, for inviting The Cincinnati Buckeyes and The Ohio 9 to their town for this event! We were honored to spend the day with you! Also thanks to Bill "Pick" Dieckmann, a former Cincinnati Red Stocking, for serving as arbiter for this fine match.

Our next event is in two weeks on Saturday July 11th, we are hosting an all-day tournament starting at 9am, featuring eight vintage base ball teams (yes, two words). It was a fine day for base ball on the friendly grounds of Corwin-Nixon fields in Mason as your Ohio 9 were back in action against the Dayton Clodbuster Base Ball Club for one nine-inning match. Sunshine was plentiful and the clouds were few as the temps moved into the mid 80s.

The 9 struck first, putting a four-spot on the board in the top of the first with six, count 'em six consecutive hits by Ralph "Hobo" Klosterman, Christian "Boston" Olsson, William "Elmer" Segrist, Robbie "Bear Claw" Kocol, Chris "Butcher" Hunter, and Jim "Tugboat" Breen, who drove in two with his single to left. The second frame wasn't as kind to The 9, who went down in order. We picked up in the third frame though, with strong hitting by the same cast of characters, adding five more tallies to our total.

Defense was stellar all day long in this bound game, including an outstanding foul ball snag by Dylan "Scooter" Schuster in the bottom of the first. In addition to some good hitting and driving in four runs on the day, our hurler Tugboat also played solid defensively, coming off the mound to make several key plays. One play included a strong throw to Elmer to nail a runner at first, probably a bit stronger than it should have been, since only fifteen feet separated the two ballists.

After a few scoreless innings in the middle of the game, the later innings were much kinder to The 9, adding several more tallies to their total.

Spotlighting some fine striking on the day:
Raymond "Straps" Piening drove in three runs and drove in three,
Hobo went six for seven and scored four runs,
Boston went five for six and scored three runs,
Elmer and Bearclaw both went four for six and scored four runs,
And Butcher went five for six, and drove in two.

Many thanks to the Clodbusters for making the trip south from Dayton for this afternoon affair.

Your Ohio 9 are back in action next weekend, heading to Shaker Village outside of Harrodsburg, Kentucky to face the Bluegrass Barons of Lexington. The 9 are looking to avenge a doubleheader loss suffered at the hands of the Barons earlier this year. Hope to see you there!

After getting rained out last weekend, The Ohio 9 opened their season today a bit dryer at Corwin-Nixon fields in beautiful Mason, Ohio, starting off the first full season at their new home field. They were joined by the Bluegrass Barons of Lexington, Kentucky, for two 7 inning matches. We want to extend a heartfelt welcome to our two newest members, Sam "Timber" Spight, and Scott "Goose" Gossett. Scott received his nickname right before the game, not because it was similar to his last name (well maybe a little), but from the sighting of a goose walking through our outfield.

The skies were cloudy for the first pitch of Game 1, which didn't see much run production from either team. The only runs for The 9 were from William "Elmer" Segrist's 2 RBIs on a 2-out double. "Timber" went 2 for 3 in his debut, and Elmer had a fantastic rolling bound catch on a ball in foul territory. Otherwise The 9 struggled on defense for most of the game, and the Barons went on to best us in the first match by a score of 5 to 2.

We all settled in as the sun finally came out for the second match, which perked up everyone's spirits and bats. Joshua "Axeman" Engel went 4 for 4, Jim "Tugboat" Breen and Rob "Papa Scoot" Schuster both went 3 for 3. "Goose" drove in his first two RBIs in his vintage debut. Even with this solid effort, your 9 again struggled on defense, and again came up a bit short as the Barons won 14-6.

Many thanks to the Barons for driving north to meet up for a fine day of base ball. We look forward to seeing them again in a couple of months as we travel south to Shaker Village outside of Harrodsburg, Kentucky on 20 June.

Also thanks to Jonathan "Rainman" Goebel who stepped in as arbiter as he continues the healing process.
