Pre-camp preparation: Coaches have massive lists of athletes at their camp and if they do not know your name you get marked off the list. Email every coach who will be there five days before camp to introduce yourself, let them know you will be attending, and start a real conversation

Stick to your strengths during camp: 99% of coaches are not looking for a star player. They invited you because they think you can fill a specific role on their roster. Show them you can do exactly that

Follow up after camp: Send every coach a thank you email, attach additional film they have not seen, and ask what the next steps in the process look like

Nail the subject line: Combine your grad year, position, GPA (if it is strong), and your name. Do not pack it with extra info or your email goes straight to spam

Lead with the essentials: The first two lines have to tell the coach who you are, where you are from, and why you are reaching out. Without those three things they have no reason to keep reading

Use a time based description with your film: Instead of dropping a random link, add a short line like “here is a 90 second highlight from my junior year” so the coach knows exactly what they are clicking on and how long it takes

Close with a logical question: End your email with a question that moves the relationship forward and makes it easy for the coach to respond

Take ownership right away: Thank the coach for coming to watch you compete and apologize that they had to see a rough game. This shows you take responsibility instead of blaming your teammates

Be specific about what went wrong: Let the coach know you watched the film and can see exactly where you went wrong. Mention that you already talked with your coaches and everyone is on the same page about what needs to improve

Get another shot in front of them: Ask if they would be open to giving you the opportunity to make up for that bad performance by coming out to another game

Follow up one week later: For every coach who does not respond send a follow up seven days after your first email. After sending over 100,000 emails for my athletes I can tell you follow ups get the most responses by far

Saying “I can’t make it” tells a coach you are not serious about starting the recruiting process with their program 👇

Open with gratitude and interest: Thank the coach for the camp invite and let them know you will speak with your parents today about the possibility of attending because you are very interested in their program. Immediately shutting the door kills the conversation

Respect their time: Let the coach know you do not want to take up too much of their time and that you just have one quick question. This makes them way more likely to respond to what you ask next

Ask about other opportunities: Ask if their camp is the only way to be evaluated by their staff or if there are other opportunities throughout the year to get in front of them
