Most people approach their fitness like it’s an either-or decision. Either they strength train or they do cardio. I understand why, because time is limited and it can feel like you have to pick a lane.

A University of Queensland study that followed more than 8,000 adults over nine years just gave us some of the most compelling data I’ve seen on why combining both is non-negotiable for long-term health.

Adults who did both strength training and cardio regularly had a 23 percent reduction in cancer risk, a 24 percent reduction in hypertension, and up to a 50 percent reduction in type 2 diabetes compared to those who only did one or the other.

Those are not small improvements. Those are life-changing numbers.

Cardio strengthens your cardiovascular system and improves circulation. Strength training builds muscle, protects your joints, and raises your metabolic rate at rest. Together they create a level of chronic disease protection that neither one produces alone.

You don’t need to spend hours doing both every day. Two to three strength sessions and two to three moderate cardio sessions per week, done consistently over time, is what produced those results.

If you are not sure how to fit both into your schedule without burning out, that is exactly what we work through together.

The strategy that worked in your 20s will actively work against you in your 40s.

When your metabolic rate naturally slows and your stress levels are higher than they have ever been, eating too little and spending hours doing cardio only makes things worse. Cutting calories too aggressively spikes cortisol and signals your body to hold onto fat while burning muscle instead. Relying only on cardio without strength training slows your metabolism over time because muscle is what drives your resting calorie burn. And chronically poor sleep keeps cortisol elevated around the clock, which drives fat storage directly to your midsection regardless of how clean your diet is.

The fix is not more discipline or more effort. It is the right combination of moderate nutrition, progressive strength training, and real recovery. All three have to work together. If you are ready to stop guessing and start seeing real progress, DM me FIX for a free strategy session. Please SHARE and follow Derek Scott for more.

I have been working on this for a while and I am proud to announce my coaching partnership with Restore You Weight Loss Clinic in Memphis, Tennessee.

Restore You specializes in helping adults achieve real, sustainable weight loss through medically supervised therapies. As their fitness and nutrition coaching partner, my role is to make sure patients do not just lose weight, but build strength, preserve lean muscle, and develop the daily habits that make those results last a lifetime.

This partnership exists because medication and coaching are not competing approaches. They are complementary ones. The medication manages appetite and drives initial weight loss. The coaching protects muscle mass, builds physical capacity, and creates the lifestyle infrastructure that keeps the weight off long term.

If you are in the Memphis or Southaven area and you are currently on a weight loss journey or considering starting one, support is available on both the medical and coaching sides.

More details coming later this week about an upcoming event.

DM me RESTORE and let’s talk about what this means for you.
