First off, many thanks to everyone who has called or texted to check on Cindy. Last Thursday, Cindy had an endoscopy and tissue was taken for biopsies. Earlier this week we were informed that Cindy has stomach cancer. The pathology report confirmed the same cell markers as her breast cancer, almost 13 years ago. Sadly, we have all witnessed Cindy losing weight since last fall. Some of the weight loss was from changing a progesterone medication, which had caused her much inflammation, fluid retention, and weight gain over a period of years. So, the change in this medication had a desirable effect, but unfortunately, the weight loss continued. In recent weeks, Cindy has become more frail and easily tired. The local healthcare system, which she worked in for 37 years, the one she trusted, unfortunately, has failed her, as local healthcare has become very un user-friendly, very untimely, extremely inefficient, and controlled by money. It’s a system, it’s not health care. As of tonight, she is still waiting for the office of local oncologists to return calls. How pathetic.
Fortunately, this situation has been pursued in an aggressive fashion, and the first of next week we will be taking Cindy to two different cancer centers, far from here. We have a lot of RACING left to do, and we need a battle plan. Cindy and I do this together, from cutting the grass, fixing things, working on the track together, promoting a race, wrapping things up, putting equipment away, and gathering the trash, and you name it. We are a TEAM that always strives to do the best for you the racer. We need our Cindy! We need to get her healthy!
Cindy is physically and emotionally exhausted. We are both emotionally exhausted. We need your prayers.
In 2014, when Cindy and I started cutting the grass at Mardela Speedway, just so it would maintain the look of a speedway, she was finishing up her chemotherapy and radiation from breast cancer that was diagnosed in 2013. Here are some pictures from that timeframe, when unfortunately, she lost her hair to then wear a wig, and later was able to sport an attractive short hairstyle. We have been trying to remind her of just how tough she is. After her surgery, like the next day, she did a 5K walk with our girls to support breast cancer awareness. She never missed a day of work at Beebe Medical, and worked at Mardela Speedway. I am blessed to be her husband. She is a beautiful person inside and out. She cared about her patients, unlike many who are just putting in time, and I know because even retired many of her patients still stay in touch with her and visit her.
Unfortunately, we will not be racing this weekend, but with a battle plan in place we will be racing on August 22nd.
We need to maintain Cindy’s strength for next week. 🏁
