I wrote this post in about 10 minutes in between sets when I was training yesterday. I was watching others train and thinking about my clients, friends, and fellow gym buddies, thinking how easy it is to spot those that have a novice vs those that have an experienced mindset.

When I started in this industry, the only thing available for quick and easy information online was bodybuilding.com (and what a resource it was!), and I’m actually really glad I didn’t have access to as many resources as there is now.

Because the problem is a little bit of knowledge can lead to over confidence, and you might be saying ‘what’s wrong with that’? Sometimes nothing, and if it gives you the confidence to go to the gym where you otherwise wouldn’t then great! But it becomes a problem if it stops you getting results, or means you take twice as long to get there when if you only made some simple changes to mindset you would get there so much quicker.

The problem is doing the basics isn’t really that glamorous or exciting so can get overlooked:

- do the same program for weeks or even months
- do the same exercises until you can no longer progressively overload
- walk that fine line between pushing to the max without risking injury

You just have to do the same things, over and over, and get really bloody good at them. It really is as simple as that.

Social media makes it exciting but also confusing AF when it doesn’t need to be. And if you are feeling overwhelmed? Get a coach. You will never ever regret it.

Summer is coming and it’s time to be honest with yourself. If you are stuck in an unhappy cycle with your body and any of these hit home then tackle them head on. Only you can make the changes.

if these feel kinda harsh, but sometimes a bit of tough love is just what you need (just ask my clients!).

I’ve recently come home to Australia after US trip with 4 domestic flights and I am GENUINELY perplexed by two things on these flights:

1. Why does everyone keep their windows shades down on daytime flights?! This is so odd! Why wouldn’t you want the outside light to keep you awake??

2. Why does the captain leave the seatbelt sign on for most of the flight? It literally gets turned off for 10 minutes in the middle of the flight no matter how long it is, and everyone just stays seated. This does not happen in the UK Or Aus! The aircraft can be still steeply climbing and it’s turned off.

Really want to know the answers to these please!!

I lost 1kg on my holiday totally unexpectedly 👀

Leading into the holiday, I was in a 12 week deficit and lost 3.5kg. I honestly thought I would put on around 2kg on the trip, and was certainly not expecting to lose more.

I put it down to a few things:

1. As we were away for so long we ate the majority of our meals at home so I was eating similar to I would normally, with probably slightly less caloric snacks as we were out and about a lot

2. I was moving more consistently throughout the day as opposed to sitting for long periods as I do at home

3. I was so relaxed! No stress at all. My body felt amazing and no doubt my inflammation was down.

4. Training volume was down and I wasn’t training so intensely.

5. My natural set point when I’m not tracking is to eat less. Tracking keeps me accountable to getting the calories in.

So this loss is probably a combination of fat, muscle and water, and just a reminder that the number on the scale is never one variable only.

Always consider all factors which could be contributing and why, only then can you adjust accordingly from there.

In terms of me and my goals from here, I’m actually not sure. I certainly don’t want to lose anymore muscle. But I do enjoy being leaner. My cycle was 40 days while I was away so was a long one. I went to see what happens with my next period to give me more of an indication of how my body is handling the weight loss.

🇺🇸 30 hours in Manhattan Beach:

One thing that has really set this holiday apart for me is that we’ve really tried to not put ourselves in positions where travel days turn into hell days. I want to make a travel day as easy as I possibly could. For example when we landed at 5am in Orlando from a red eye, I booked accom from the night before so we could go straight there and not wait until a 3pm check in.

So we didn’t want to fly directly from Portland, land at 1pm and not fly home until 11.30pm the same day and decided to stay one extra night in LA before flying home.

Originally for this leg of the journey we were going to stay in an airport hotel and keep our fingers crossed we could get a late check out. However when we stayed in Manhattan at the start, I loved it so much I knew it’s where I wanted to end the holiday too. So I cancelled the hotel, and booked 2 nights in an AirBnB so we didn’t have to worry about checking out early when we didn’t need to be at the airport until 9pm that night.

Of course this is more expensive, but I highly recommend it when travelling as it takes so much stress out of those otherwise awful days. We also ended up getting another hire car, which Jack was very excited about, a true old school American muscle car. It really did tie a bow in an amazing trip. 😍

We’ve only done about 4 meals out this whole trip - and thank god because it’s allowed us to spend money on other things (eating out is so expensive with the exchange rate). But on our last night we went out for an exceptional steak. We’ve found meat, and particularly red meat, to be so expensive here. So two steaks, sides and drinks later and we were out of pocket about $450 AUD!! Mind blown. 🤯

A beach trip, meal out, great coffee, my favourite morning walk, a gym session and of course one final trip to Erewhon later, and this last day in LA ticked all the boxes.

🇺🇸 Thoughts on Portland:

I think Portlands Moto is ‘Keep Portland Weird’, and that really does sum it up nicely.

Heading to Portland was a little left of field for our trip, however a necessity for Jack as he was coaching in the U20s Athletics World Champs and was one of the reasons we actually chose America to travel to.

Having been to Seattle before (and not loving it at all. In fact from memory I couldn’t wait to leave - sorry Seattle), and doing a bit of research of the area, I already had a very good idea of what to expect and knew I wouldn’t love it, but would be a good experience. It’s quirky, odd, very very left, and full of vintage shops and good coffee.

I’d be lying if I said I loved it here but I can say I still enjoyed my time. The natural beauty and clean air are phenomenal, and had we had more time (and the air not full of smoke from fires), I would have loved to have hiked and really explored the full outdoors or had to offer. The coffee is outstanding wherever you go (even at the airport), we found a good gym and a great contrast to the other parts of the states on our trip.

We also found a local gym chain that has a couple of great gyms, and somehow I even managed to get my nails and tan done here too. How I managed to find somewhere to spray tan me when I’m sure their second moto is ‘Keep Portland Pale’ I’ll never know 😂

Portland - you are everything you say you are. And I highly recommend to anyone who loves a slower pace in life, loves vintage shopping, tarot reading, being creative and free flowing and everything in between. As we know that’s not me, so I’ll say it was nice seeing you, but I probably won’t be back!

🇺🇸 40 hours in Chicago:

I was totally unprepared for how huge, hectic and noisy this city would be. If you’ve been to New York it’s on par but has its own vibe. Where New York has Central Park, Chicago has Lake Michigan with its own beach. The lake is so big it feels like the ocean, and I love I was so deep in the city one minute, to being able to breath the fresh air the next and see water (I swear if I don’t see big bodies of water regular my nervous system can’t cope!).

It is so different to the other two places we have been; a hotel instead of an air BnB (made me realise how much I hate hotels, give me fresh air and independence any day over a hotel), city instead of a neighbourhood with constant sirens, noise and people (again I think I prefer the quiet life), and relying on Ubers as opposed to our own transport (yes you guessed it, I prefer having our own ride). BUT that said I loved this experience.

We got to go to a Baseball game with amazing seats at the iconic Wrigley Field Cubs stadium, rode the subway which always makes the experience more authentic than driving, and ate some amazing food with shopping on our doorstep.

We had to search a little harder for a good coffee but eventually found two great places. And that’s what I love about travelling and exploring new places. Going from that initial impression of somewhere to exploring, figuring it out, and finishing with a totally different view.

Chicago left me feeling a little frazzled, but for the right reasons. Doing a two day city break in the middle of the trip made it so unique. With the constant sirens, noise and smells the amount of time was perfect. I don’t think my senses could take much more! It was a great stop over before we head to our penultimate destination of Portland.

🇺🇸 Orlando Part 2:

Jack asked me how I’d rate Florida and I gave it a solid 9/10. It’s one of those places I could see myself just slipping into my daily life very easily if you moved to the right place.

I am also so incredibly proud that Jack got to race internationally for the first time and make the final - a dream of his for a long time!

This part of the trip has definitely been more varied than LA. I loved the gym (and will do a separate post on that later), the neighbourhood, the hire car, the weather, I could go on!

A few extra observations:
1. You are either sweating your balls off outside or needing a puffer coat and freezing with the aircon inside. There is no inbetween.
2. You can’t beat the mozzies, the climate means they are everywhere.
3. Humidity is on another level. My hair was no my coping.
4. People driving is even more crazy than LA but in a different way. On the highways you feel like you are taking your life into your own hands, and what’s even more crazy is you don’t even have to wear a helmet on a motorbike.
5. Orlando is so much more than theme parks, but you have to go searching for it if you want to find it.

I’ve gone from never thinking I wanted to go back to Florida to wondering if and when I will be back. Hopefully until next time! ✌🏻
