Good evening Cyclones Families,
We wanted to share a concerning situation that occurred Monday night after practice. A parent witnessed one of our athletes speaking and walking with an unfamiliar individual.
The individual reportedly said he had lost his phone and asked the athlete for help, including asking to use her phone as a flashlight. The athlete did not know him. When that parent called out to her, he returned the phone and said he would come back the next day to look for it.
Regardless of whether his explanation was truthful, the situation highlights the importance of following clear safety procedures, especially after the lights go out and the area becomes dark.
Effective immediately, please follow these pick up expectations:
Parents or designated adults must pick up athletes directly at the door of Salemwood School
Do not ask younger athletes to walk up the street, through the parking lot, or meet at another location alone.
Athletes should remain inside the designated pick up area until their parent or approved adult arrives.
Athletes should not leave practice alone, accept help from, or engage with unfamiliar individuals.
If someone approaches an athlete, the athlete should move immediately towards a coach, staff member, parent, or other trusted adult and report what happened.
Please notify a coach or staff member if someone unfamiliar is lingering near the school or parking lot.
Although some older athletes may be mature enough to walk independently, we strongly encourage parents to meet all athletes at the school door whenever possible. If someone other than a parent is picking up your child, please make sure your child and the coaching staff knows who that person is in advance.
Please speak to your children before the next practice about these expectations. Their safety depends on staying with trusted adults, avoiding unfamiliar people, and never walking off alone in a dark area.
The safety of your children is our highest priority. Thank you for your immediate attention, understanding, and cooperation.
