Ujjayi pranayama is such a beautiful practice for learning how to work with the breath in a more deliberate way.
What I love about pranayama is that it gives you something very tangible to focus on. You are paying attention to the length of the inhale, the retention, the exhale, your posture, and the subtle shifts that happen in the body while you breathe.
In this variation, we work with a simple 1:1:1 ratio. Five counts to inhale, five to retain, and five to exhale. It sounds simple, but practices like this can teach you so much about breath control, concentration, steadiness, and your relationship to the pause between breaths.
Like anything in yoga, it becomes more refined with practice. The goal is not to force the breath, but to make it smoother, steadier, and more conscious over time.
