The Runway Report

Ticket up in Leawood: Rotary's Labor Day 5K, bib 17, one line cook reporting solo. A chef, yes — just not the canned kind. Boy-Ar-Dee never ran a morning shift in his life, and this kitchen doesn't stock anything that comes in a tin. Yes, Chef.

The board read overnight storms into a ninth course of steam-table conditions by sunrise — thick, wet heat like the line during a Saturday rush. This one landed as the palate cleanser in between: three cool miles squeezed between what already fell and what was still coming to a boil. Fire it, walk it, plate it before the heat catches up.

Service didn't close at the finish line. Dessert came out fast — a medal plated up before the ribbon even cooled — but the rail still had 2.4 more on it. Called "Behind" through the back of the pack, hot pan in hand, and kept walking the ticket down. Close it out, wipe the station, walk again tomorrow. All day.

Up next: Playing with bright ideas for Glow in the Park, then I've waited the longest time for this look at Plaza 10K
Pieces/ Parts: Rewear
By the Numbers: 324 unique costumes/combos in 332 races, 214 solo runs, and 16 group runs = 562 costumed runs

The Runway Report - Week 335, Sept. 5: Solo Show for Mr. Mercury's 80th

Only one way to mark it: lace up, strut out, and let the Mercury Gymnastics parking lot serve as more than just a parking lot for once. One way out, no loop back — because this run, like the man himself, was always moving forward. Keep Yourself Alive as the legs were still a little stiff, crowd (of exactly nobody, on a Northland paver runway) not yet won over, but the Killer Queen strut showed up by the half-mile marker anyway.

Is this the real life or is this just fantasy — because somewhere at intermission, the armband gave up the ghost. It surrendered to sweat and gravity and had to be peeled off like a bad wig. Fortunately, Love of My Life (AKA Mrs. Cosplay Runner) was working the course like true stage crew, rolling up with fresh ice wraps roughly every two and a half miles, no diva behavior required — just quiet, unglamorous logistics keeping the show from stopping. Somebody to Love found me every time!

The final stretch called for a costume change, even for Mr. Fahrenheit, so the tank and tights came off down to just the skivvy pants, tunes still cranked for whoever showed up to the afterparty. The only real heckler on the route was a cyclist who, fair enough, just wanted to ride her bicycle — but yelling "DON'T RUN IN THE MIDDLE" at the only other human on a twelve-foot-wide path? Even Freddie wasn't that extra. No hard feelings; the Show Must Go On. It ended the way it should — I took my bow, my curtain call, and lit eighty candles' worth of gratitude for a guy who never did anything halfway.

In any era, language, or place, this celebrates an extraordinary life. Parsi-Zoroastrian calendar, this date fell exactly on Navroz (New Year’s Day)—the 1st day of the 1st month (Hormazd Roj, Farvardin Mah). 🌅

Wishing you Ushta-te (may happiness be unto you) and new beginnings!

The Runway Report - Week 334, Aug. 29: Tiblow Trot 5 mile

Some hills have history — the kind where an underdog climbs them and finds out whether there's still a fighter in him. Same course as last year, same brutal climbs, but this time I wasn't just surviving it, I was meeting it. Whatever you want to call that shift, it showed up on the hills and it showed up in the split.

And the split told the story. Last year I ground out every step; this year I put over 2 minutes per mile between me and my old self. Not 2 minutes total... per mile, which by Tiblow math turns "he's got heart" into "somebody sound the bell, we've got a new challenger." Somewhere out there, Apollo's shaking his head.

The real fight came after, when the gloves and wig went missing from where I'd set them down — a toddler named Rain had other plans, and getting them back took diplomacy Mickey never covered. Crisis handled, it was straight to Ten and Two for coffee and birthday bundtinis for Fran — no ringside announcer required, just cake and the people who showed up to watch all contenders go the distance.

Up next: Solo run on a regally important birthday with a rising thermometer; also something fun cooking for Labor Day
Pieces/ Parts: First time doing a full race sans shirt! Robe only for pics before/after, and gloves only on for the last 0.5 mile or so. And don't worry, the face was just fine.
By the Numbers: 323 unique costumes/combos in 331 races, 213 solo runs, and 16 group runs = 560 costumed runs
