In the United States, it’s not unusual for a child to walk into their first riding lesson and be labeled a “hunter rider” by the end of the week. Trainer David Reichert believes this early specialization is one of the biggest flaws in our system.

“What unfortunately happens a lot in America is early specialization,” he explained. “You go to a riding school, and that typically happens to be a hunter riding school. After day two of being in that school, you’re considered a hunter. And then you stay in that hunter path forever. You don’t get proper dressage education, and you may not even touch [the jumpers] until way later.”

The result? Riders develop in a silo. They may be polished enough to compete in the short term, but they lack the cross-discipline foundation that makes truly competent horsemen.

Reichert grew up in Germany, where every rider learns dressage and jumping before choosing a specialty. To even enter a recognized show, young riders must first pass two “riding badges.”

Badge I: A training-level dressage test, a 75 cm jumping round judged on style, and a theory exam.
Badge II: A first-level dressage test, a 95 cm style-jumping class, and a more advanced theory exam.

Only after proving competence across disciplines are riders allowed to compete. By then, most young Germans have schooled second-level dressage and jumped 1.10–1.20m, regardless of whether they later pursue hunters, jumpers, or dressage.

“For us, it’s completely normal to grow up in both dressage and jumping,” Reichert said. “It doesn’t matter which discipline you end up choosing. If you can ride the horse, you can ride the horse.”

Two weeks in, and this young horse is already giving us so much to be excited about 🤍

We took Cypress to his very first horse show after having him in the barn for just two weeks, with no expectations other than to give him a positive first experience.

Between thunderstorms, a brand-new environment, and all the chaos that comes with a busy horse show, he handled every new question with so much maturity. He put in a wonderful dressage clinic and followed it up with some great rounds in both of his dressage classes.

For a young horse at his first show, we couldn’t have asked for more. We’re incredibly excited to keep developing him, building on this foundation, and seeing what he becomes!

That clean sweep feeling looks pretty good on these two 🥇
Nothing more rewarding than watching the hours of hard work behind the scenes turn into moments like this. So proud of this pair and everything they put into this show.

That’s a wrap on our first show back 👏🏼

A fun weekend getting these two back in the ring and seeing where all the work at home has gotten us. Some great rounds, some things to take home and polish, and a whole lot to look forward to.

Safe to say we’re happy to have show season back. 🤍

Equitation often carries a reputation as a junior rider’s proving ground. But Geoff Teall makes a compelling case that every rider, regardless of age or discipline, can benefit from training like an equitation rider.

“Equitation riders learn more about lengthening and shortening, turning, lightening, and making their horses responsive than most riders in other disciplines,” he writes. Those skills stretch the rider, challenge the horse, and ultimately make both more capable in the long run.

At its core, equitation is about learning how to ride into and out of problems. “Since fine-tuning your equitation skills involves learning how to ride into and out of specific problems, you learn a lot about training,” Teall explains.

Instead of simply drilling a course, equitation work encourages riders to think critically. Each challenge becomes an opportunity to use position, balance, and timing to find the solution. By approaching mistakes as puzzles to solve, riders develop resilience, confidence, and a stronger sense of feel.

One of our favorite ways to introduce bigger fences? Grids.

They give both horse and rider a chance to focus on the jump without having to manufacture the perfect distance. The setup helps create the rhythm for them, so the rider can concentrate on staying balanced and confident while the horse learns to use their body and understand the question.

When it’s time to move the jumps up, we want the height to feel like the easiest part of the exercise- not the scary part. That’s how we build confidence without skipping steps.

More than a barn— a home.

There’s something special about pulling through the gate, hearing horses nickering from the barn, and knowing you’ve found a place where both you and your horse belong.

That’s what we’ve built at Ark Show Stables. A place where horses are cared for like they’re our own, riders are encouraged to keep learning, and everyone is treated like family.

We want Ark to be a place you’re proud to call home. Schedule a tour to see why we’re proud to call it ours.

Welcome home. Welcome to Ark. 🤍

The future professionals of our industry aren’t built in one-hour lessons.

They’re built by showing up, asking questions, caring for the horses, helping their team, learning how a barn operates, preparing for horse shows, and taking every opportunity to grow.

That’s why our Working Student Program is about so much more than riding. It’s designed for motivated riders who want to immerse themselves in the equestrian industry, gain real-world experience, and develop the skills that create confident equestrians both in and out of the saddle.

Whether your dream is to compete, work in the horse industry, or simply become the best rider you can be, there’s no substitute for hands-on experience.

If you’re ready to learn beyond the lesson, we’d love to help you take that next step.
