Sciatica relief and sciatica recovery are not necessarily the same thing.

When pain decreases, it can be tempting to consider the problem solved. But symptom relief may also create an opportunity to address something pain medication or an injection cannot: how your body moves and functions.

Mobility, strength, physical conditioning, and movement strategies can all be part of the conversation. And because sciatica is not one condition with one movement solution, there isn’t one “best” yoga pose that works for everyone.

So where does yoga therapy fit in?

Our latest blog looks at the research on yoga and sciatica, the difference between symptom relief and recovery, and why an individualized approach to movement matters.

What does it actually mean to “engage your glutes” in yoga?

It doesn’t mean contracting them as hard as you can—or keeping them contracted throughout your entire practice. Glute engagement should respond to what the movement requires.

One way to build that awareness is to notice where you feel the work. Depending on the pose, you may feel the gluteus maximus at the back of the hip or the gluteus medius along the outer hip working more. Rather than trying to contract everything at once, pay attention to which muscles are responding to the particular job your hip and pelvis are performing. Swipe through the slides to see how that changes in Tree, Warrior III and Chair.

You can experiment with that awareness in your own practice. Notice whether intentionally recruiting the appropriate muscles changes your stability, your control of the pelvis, or the amount of unnecessary tension you create elsewhere.

The goal is appropriate muscle engagement—not maximum muscle engagement.

Which pose makes it easiest for you to feel your glutes working: Tree, Warrior III or Chair?

Save this one and experiment with it during your next yoga class here in Madison, NJ.

Can Reiki help with anxiety?

A growing body of research is looking at that question—and the findings are worth paying attention to.

A 2024 meta-analysis of 13 controlled studies involving 824 adults found that Reiki had a statistically significant effect on reducing anxiety. Placebo-controlled research is also encouraging: in 2 of 3 studies involving people with clinically relevant anxiety, Reiki significantly reduced anxiety compared with placebo.

The research has included people with chronic health conditions, those experiencing anxiety related to medical procedures, people with depression, and adults from the general population.

If anxiety has been taking up more space in your life than you’d like, Reiki may be something you’d like to experience for yourself. Our Reiki practitioners are here to support you and look forward to being part of your journey.

We passed!! 🎉🥂

After weeks of studying, practice exams, anatomy, physiology, assessments, programming, formulas, training principles, and a whole lot of terminology… Jeannie and I officially passed our NASM Certified Personal Trainer exams! 💪

We’re pretty happy to trade the study materials for celebratory drinks.🥂

We pursued this certification with some very specific goals in mind, and we’re excited to put everything we’ve learned to work at Foundations Yoga and Therapy.

There may even be a few new things coming… 👀

For tonight, though, we’re celebrating. We did it! 🎉💜
