If you know Beth, you know she’s no stranger to staying active. As a Special Olympics figure skater, strength, stability and mobility are a big part of helping her keep doing what she loves, both on and off the ice. ⛸️

We tend to think of “safe" as avoiding anything that could cause an injury.

But there’s another kind of risk we don't talk about enough:

The risk of becoming too weak for everyday life.

Getting off the floor. Carrying groceries. Catching yourself when you trip. Climbing stairs. Getting out of a chair without using your hands.

Those things require strength.

That doesn't mean lifting recklessly. It means building strength gradually, with the right exercises, the right load and good coaching.

Because as we get older, the goal isn't simply to avoid getting hurt.

It's to keep building a body capable of doing life.

What’s something you want to still be able to do easily 10, 20 or 30 years from now?

Your scale is measuring the wrong thing.

A recent meta-analysis looked at data from more than 1.1 million adults and found that adults with low lean mass had a 42% higher risk of dying from any cause than those with high lean mass. For men, it was 56%.

And one finding really caught my attention: smaller calf circumference was associated with more than double the mortality risk.

Meanwhile, your bathroom scale tells you one thing: what you weigh.

It can’t tell you how much of that weight is muscle versus body fat.

That’s why I like tools like the InBody scan. It gives us a better look at body composition and helps us track whether we’re building muscle and losing fat even when the scale isn’t changing much.

Because the goal isn’t just to weigh less.

It’s to build a body that’s strong enough to carry you through your 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond.

Muscle is life insurance. You can’t buy it. You have to build it.
