'Brutal' CCTV shows man's throat slashed at pub before international manhunt 07/26/2026

It was “just a knife.”

This graphic video shows what a Stanley utility knife with a blade only an inch long can do. The suspect severs the victims carotid artery and he bleeds out in seconds.

The suspect (Corey Ruiz) in the Madison shooting was armed with a kitchen knife that appears to have at least a six inch blade.

The truth is a knife in a close quarters fight is just as deadly as a gun. With a flick of his wrist to the right part of the body, Ruiz could have killed any of the officers within arms length.

He also did not draw this weapon when officers approached and warned them to stay back - he waited until they were on top of him, hands on, before he produced it. That demonstrates his intent to use it on those officers to injure them, not simply a bluff to get them to back off.

14 LEOs from across the state braved wildfire smoke, a 109 degree heat-index and 12-hour days to complete our 24-hour Patrol Designated Marksman Course over the course of two days. These men worked hard in tough conditions, which is a testament to their commitment to hone critical shooting skills they may one day have to use to save innocent lives in their communities.

This course is designed to teach officers how to effectively run a magnified-optic equipped patrol rifle (SPR / light precison carbine / etc), creating marksmen who can bridge the gap between SWAT snipers and regular patrol officers during tactical calls, public events and other patrol-related functions. The extensive shooting package required officers to engage targets from close range to 350 yards from variety of improvised and sustained positions, emphasizing the importance of balancing precision AND speed based on the situation and target.

While I am a believer in allowing officers to utilize magnified optics on patrol, like anything else, if you really want to see the full benefits of a piece of equipment, you need invest in high-quality training and officers need to practice their newly learned skills.

Thank you to the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office for hosting. If you are interesting in starting a DM program at your agency or hosting this course in 2027, reach out via messenger or email.

Beautiful day yesterday at The Highlands for Intermediate Scoped Carbine with our partners at Rapid Defense.

On this second day of our three-day scoped carbine series, we refreshed ballistics and wind effects from day 1 as well as the maximum point blank range, repeatedly making quick and accurate shots out to 600 yards.

The rest of the class consisted of barricade shooting, working “perfect” barricade positions off tripods, then adapting the principles learned to not so perfect positions on whatever each barricade offered. Like all our classes, both speed and accuracy count - regardless of distance or target.

Thanks again to Rapid Defense and The Highlands for a great day.
