Mr. Irving is showing some fantastic knife defenses here! đŸ”ȘđŸ„‹

Self-defense training isn’t just about knowing a technique—it’s about learning to stay calm, react with purpose, control the situation, and move decisively when the pressure is on.

At Madison Heights Family Martial Arts, students practice these skills again and again in a controlled environment so the movements become sharper, faster, and more instinctive.

And Mr. Irving is making this one look GOOD. đŸ‘đŸ”„

If you’ve spent any time at Madison Heights Family Martial Arts, you already know Master Clements has a serious appreciation for the ’80s.

So when this hair started flying during graduation
we’re pretty sure Master Clements shed a tiny tear of pride. 😂

The headband. The action shot. The perfectly timed hair flip. All we’re missing is a guitar solo and a training montage.

10/10 technique. 11/10 ’80s energy. đŸ€˜đŸ„‹

Okay, these two look AWESOME. đŸ”„đŸ„‹

There’s something pretty special about a husband and wife stepping onto the mat together—not just cheering each other on from the sidelines, but training, learning, testing, and growing side by side.

Here at Madison Heights Family Martial Arts, graduation isn’t only for the kids! Our adults get out there and show what they’ve been working on too, and these two absolutely brought it with their grab techniques.

Because martial arts is even better when the person beside you is also the person you get to go home with. ❀

Graduation is where all that training gets a chance to shine! đŸ„Š

Here at Madison Heights Family Martial Arts, students don’t just practice techniques—they learn how to put focus, timing, accuracy, and power together.

Boxing drills like this one give students a moving target and an opportunity to sharpen their hand-eye coordination while putting their skills to work. And at graduation, it’s pretty awesome to see how far that training has come!

Strong technique. Sharp focus. Confident students. đŸ’Ș

Buddy Week is coming to Madison Heights Family Martial Arts August 21st–26th! This is your chance to bring a friend, classmate, neighbor, or family member along and show them why you love martial arts so much.

Buddies don’t need any martial arts experience—they’ll simply join you in a beginner class, where they can jump in, learn some new skills, meet everyone, and experience the fun for themselves!

Great hobbies are even better when you get to share them with a friend. â€ïžđŸ„‹

Who are YOU bringing to Buddy Week?

Earning a black belt comes with more than a new rank.

There is ceremony here because there is meaning here.

Before receiving their black belts, our candidates sign the Black Belt Oath—a commitment to carry themselves with the honor and integrity expected of someone who has earned this rank.

And nearly everything waiting for them has a story.

đŸ„‹ Their black belt is embroidered with their own name. This isn’t a black belt. It’s their black belt—the one they earned.

âšȘ⚫ Their new uniform carries both white and black. White is a reminder that they are always a student, always learning. Black represents the rank they have worked so hard to achieve. We often say there are only two belts that really matter: white and black. Everything between them is the journey.

⚔ And then there’s the sword.

Students don’t even begin working with the sword until after earning black belt. It represents mastery—and the understanding that before you move on to something so traditional and significant, you first have to master the basics that brought you here.

Finally, there is a black belt certificate worthy of framing and hanging on the wall—a permanent reminder of what it took to get there.

None of these things are simply prizes for finishing a test.

They’re symbols.

Of years of training. Of perseverance. Of responsibility. Of the student they were when they first tied on a white belt—and the martial artist they worked to become.

Black belt isn’t just something you receive.

It’s something you earn. đŸ„‹

These two did an incredible job during their black belt test—but there’s another part of their accomplishment that deserves some recognition.

They didn’t just have to take one of the hardest tests in martial arts.

They had to be each other’s partner through it.

That means performing your own techniques while you’re exhausted
and then being the person who gets grabbed, thrown, struck, taken down, and put back on the floor so your partner can perform his.

Then you get back up.

And do it again.

And again.

For well over an hour.

All while remembering what comes next, keeping your technique sharp, controlling your power, protecting your partner, and giving him the resistance and intensity he needs to properly complete his test.

By this point, these guys were tired. They were sweaty. They’d been knocked around plenty. 😂

And look at their faces.

Still focused. Still intense. Still working.

A black belt test reveals a lot more than what techniques you’ve memorized. It shows what happens when you’re tired, uncomfortable, under pressure, and somebody is counting on you to keep going.

These two didn’t just test beside each other.

They helped each other earn it. đŸ„‹

There’s a reason board breaking comes at the end of a black belt test.

By this point, these guys had already been going full speed for well over an hour. They were tired. Sweaty. Mentally drained. The adrenaline that carried them through the beginning was wearing off.

And because they were testing together, they weren’t only performing their own techniques—they were serving as each other’s partners. Throwing, falling, getting back up, attacking, defending
and doing it again and again.

Then we handed them boards.

Not because breaking a board is the most impressive thing a martial artist can do.

Because breaking it correctly when you’re exhausted is the test.

A successful break still requires focus, aim, proper technique, power and control. There’s no room to get careless just because you’re tired—especially when someone else is holding that board for you.

One front kick. One side kick.

Two clean breaks. đŸ‘ŠđŸ„‹

They had already proven they could keep going.

This was their chance to prove that even at the end, they could still do it right.
