Luverne Tigers Football Recap- Sponsored by The Albritton Family
Luverne came out on top in a Top 10 showdown Friday night, beating Thomasville 50-37 in a game that forced the Tigers to go four quarters. The win moves Luverne to 5-0 on the season, while Thomasville suffered its first loss and fell to 4-1.
The Luverne offense put up 487 total yards on just 49 plays. The Tigers rushed for 306 yards and added another 181 through the air.
Quarterback Ja’Daveon McCreary continued his strong season. McCreary completed 5-of-8 passes for 181 yards and two touchdowns, while adding 99 yards on 11 carries. He also made an impact on special teams, returning a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown.
Elliott Harris was responsible for several of Luverne’s biggest plays. Harris rushed nine times for 81 yards and a touchdown and caught four passes for 170 yards and two touchdowns. His longest reception went for 96 yards. He finished the night with 251 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns.
Jayden Laird added two rushing touchdowns on nine carries for 46 yards and also caught one pass for 11 yards.
Thomasville made Luverne work for it, running 69 plays and finishing with 404 yards of offense. The Tigers gave up 242 yards on the ground and 162 through the air, but the Luverne defense came up with two interceptions. Daevon Smith had one of those picks and returned it for a touchdown, while Elliott Harris recorded the other.
Jadin Harris and Smith led Luverne in solo tackles with seven each. Kaiden Parker and Braylin McGhee each recorded a sack and a tackle for loss, while Jaylen Turner also had a tackle for loss.
“It was a great night of high school football. Super proud of the team, and the way they kept pushing forward and weathered the storm. Offensively we were explosive and kept the pressure on their defense. Our biggest focus will be cleaning up the turnovers because we are the only ones that can stop us. Defensively we battled but need to be in attack mode at all times and getting stops on obvious passing downs will be something we clean up this week. It was good to be tested and have to play four quarters. We have an excellent opponent coming to our town this week and have to have a great week of preparation and grow from our mistakes,” Luverne head coach Bobby Hudson said.
There won’t be much time to celebrate. Luverne will return home Friday night to host Maplesville in what will be one of the biggest games in the state.
