🥋 A BLACK BELT SHOULD MEAN SOMETHING.

Honoring Three New Black Belts — and What the Journey Represents

This weekend, we had the privilege of promoting three athletes to BLACK BELT at Fire & Ice Martial Arts.

I want people to understand something about this accomplishment:

These three did not receive a Black Belt because they showed up long enough.
They EARNED it.

There is an old saying in traditional martial arts that only a small percentage of people who begin the journey ever reach Black Belt. Whether the number is exactly 1 in 100 isn’t what matters—the principle behind it does:

A real Black Belt is supposed to be difficult to earn.

It should require years of training, failure, correction, discipline, sacrifice, perseverance and personal growth.

Because NOT ALL KARATE SCHOOLS ARE EQUAL.

Parents, please do your research before choosing where your children train.

I hear people say:

“But the instructor is so nice!”

Being kind to children is important. We love our students. We laugh with them. We encourage them. We high-five them.

But the high-five means more when it was EARNED.

Being “nice” alone doesn’t prepare a child to stand up to a bully, handle pressure, overcome failure or protect themselves when nobody is there to help them.

Structure does.
Discipline does.
Confidence does.
Accountability does.
Faith does.
Learning how to keep going when something becomes difficult does.

That is why I believe parents should look at structure, respect, discipline, critical thinking, talent when choosing a martial arts school. We can all watch any sport and tell the quality that is being taught.

COMPETITION MATTERS

At Fire & Ice, we compete outside our own school because competition provides something incredibly valuable:

A reality check.

You don’t control the judges.
You don’t control your opponent.
You don’t control what another school teaches.
