Everyone loves the idea of development—until their child is struggling at the plate, battling on the mound, losing games, or being challenged by a demanding coach.

Real development isn’t always comfortable. It means learning how to respond when confidence is shaken, results aren’t coming, and the situation isn’t ideal.

I’ve spoken with many big leaguers and collegiate players, and they consistently say the same thing: some of their greatest growth came from teams and seasons that weren’t perfect. They had to adapt, lead, compete, and make the most of uncomfortable situations. That’s where they learned to thrive.

Development doesn’t mean accepting mistreatment, but it also doesn’t mean removing every obstacle. Sometimes our job is to help young athletes work through adversity—mentally and physically—rather than rescuing them from it.

Development is part of everything we do, but it matters most when things get hard.
