This Military Weekend, we’re honoring the women who made our name mean something, and every man and woman who has served.
At our home opener, the Jacksonville Waves welcomed 101-year-old Betty Robertson Digby courtside. A veteran of the US Navy WAVES, Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service, Mrs. Digby showed us exactly what this name stands for.
The WAVES were formed in July 1942. Overnight, America had to become a major naval power, and the women on the bases held it down. They worked in administration, health care, flight training, and built and repaired planes. They ran the show while the men were called to sea. Right here in Jacksonville, at CNRSE , those women showed up and did the work.
We as players and coaches are standing on the shoulders of those women. They were always fighting for an opportunity in a space they had never been invited into. Sound familiar?
Women’s basketball has been rising for 30 years to get to where it is right now. The Upshot League exists to keep that door open. Every day we are fighting for the same visibility and leverage the original WAVES were fighting for.
To Mrs. Digby, to every veteran, and to every active service member: we see you. We carry you with us.
