Hiden Magazine April 2002

This issue had articles on Asayama Ichiden Ryu, Fusen Ryu, Yagyu Shingan Ryu, Shibukawa Ryu etc.

I've collected these for many years and great to use for reference on various topics.

Another good night on the mats.

We started with a bit of grappling to get warmed up. We discussed our class format with the group and then we continued our work on various material for rank progression. There were a multitude of things going on...locks and throws from Jujutsu, short chain and plenty of details to fill in the gaps. As always, thanks to the Black belts present that assist with the classes.

Gunbai 軍配

History and Samurai Use:
Command Tool: Daimyō and military generals used the gunbai to signal and communicate orders to troops on the battlefield.
Design: Unlike folding fans, a gunbai is rigid and solid, typically crafted from wood, lacquered metals, or heavy iron.
Symbolism: It represented high rank, authority, and honor, often decorated with traditional motifs or constellation patterns.

Sumo Referee Baton: Modern professional sumo referees (gyōji) carry a gunbai in the ring.
Decision Making: Referees use the fan to point toward the winner or signal the start of a bout.

This particular scroll is from the early 1800's and is from Ogasawara Ryu. The school is famous for Archery, Horsemanship and even etiquette.

Scroll of the Taihei Shinkyo Ryu. 太平真鏡流剣術

This is a school of Kenjutsu and this scroll is dated at the beginning of the 1800's. The scroll contains content around "calming the mind". The script is quite challenging as it is written in a more cursive form.

Good night on the mats!

Youth classes were cancelled this week due to many of us traveling. However, we did have a few show and let them have some fun. We worked on maintaining side control when someone is "wild".

The adult class did about 40 minutes of grappling which was a much welcomed workout. The remainder of the class we worked on Kukishin Ryu Sojutsu (spear). We looked at the stages of kata training. Very basic to learn the form, a middle level version with same form but more details and a third version with knowledge applied that also leads to insight into other areas of training and combat. Spear training isn't just spear training.

Interestingly, these 3 phases apply to just about any Japanese art.
Kaisho (楷書) – Block/Standard Style
Gyosho (行書) – Semi-Cursive/Running Style
Sosho (草書) – Cursive/Grass Style

The Concept of Shin-Gyo-So (真・行・草) could be expressed as Formal, Semi-Formal, and Informal.
