Please note that we have made a few updates to the current container guidelines that are posted on the NACSW website on the Rule Book page:
https://nacsw.net/sites/default/files/2026-06/2026-06-16%20NACSW%20Trial%20Container%20Guidelines%20for%20Members.pdf
We have clarified the approximate distance between the holes in the container lids (shoe boxes, HDX boxes, paint cans, cookie tins):
Holes will typically be in a line, approximately 1"-2" apart, with an allowance of +/- .5". For paint cans and cookie tins, the holes may be in a triangle pattern.
We have also elaborated on the types of distractors that can be used:
Four Distractors will be required in one Container search.
○ One toy distraction of either a tennis ball or a Kong.
● Three Food distractors which will consist of items from at least two of the following categories:
○ Meat/Protein (egg, seafood, chicken or beef, etc - no dog treats)
○ Cheese/Dairy
○ Fruit/Vegetable
○ Carbs (bread, chips, crackers, muffins, etc)
○ Nuts
○ A distractor could contain multiple items (e.g. egg & cheese or a muffin with blueberries)
In the case of a trial day with more than one Container search, these parameters will
be in only one of the NW2 Container searches.

Did you know what determines the cost of trial entry fees?
The NACSW provides the rules and oversight for events hosted across the country, but it is the individual trial hosts that determine the actual cost of the trial entry fees.
The fee is set to cover the costs incurred by the host including things like:
- Facility rental fees
- Fees and travel costs for the Certifying Official, Judges and Score Room Lead
- Insurance
- Equipment & Supplies
- Volunteer Support (food, equipment, etc.)
- Administrative overhead like website, managing entries and payments, pre-trial preparation, printing score cards and run orders
- Ribbons & NACSW fees
These costs can vary across the country and from one event to another. The trial premium is the best place to look to know the cost of the entry fee for the trial level you are entering.
