Some moments in martial arts define a lifetime.

Yesterday, I was deeply humbled to receive my 8th Degree Black Belt and the title of Hanshi from my instructor, Shihan Rick Herbster of Rising Sun Karate. Receiving this honor from the man who has guided my martial arts journey for decades is something I will cherish for the rest of my life.

What made the day even more meaningful was standing beside Shihan Herbster as we promoted my longtime student, Johnny Beano, to 5th Degree Black Belt and awarded him the title of Renshi.

To witness one generation honoring the next is what martial arts is truly about.

This ceremony took place before more than 40 Black Belts, including many of the highest-ranking martial artists in history, legends #—8th, 9th, and 10th Degree Black Belts. Standing among these legends, as a student receiving my own promotion, and as an instructor helping promote one of my own students, is an experience I will never forget.

A black belt is never the destination. Each rank represents a deeper commitment to service, leadership, humility, and the responsibility to preserve our art for the generations that follow.

Thank you, Shihan Rick Herbster, for your decades of mentorship, friendship, and belief in me. Your guidance has shaped not only my martial arts but the instructor and person I strive to be every day.

Congratulations to Renshi Johnny Beano. Watching your journey from student to instructor to 5th Degree Black Belt has been one of the greatest privileges of my career. I couldn’t be more proud of the man and martial artist you’ve become.
