Canada Day is simple on the surface: 10 provinces, 3 territories and one country stretched from coast to coast to coast.

The deeper story is messier, with Confederation beginning in 1867 and the modern country taking shape through later provinces, territories, treaties, migrations and hard arguments.

That’s what makes the day interesting, because Canada is less a finished project than a long conversation held across a very large map.
