10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Longmont

This weekend we celebrated our two year anniversary at 10th Planet Longmont. I had the opportunity to recognize the tremendous growth our team has made in that short period of time. Many of the athletes I promoted had been training for a long time before stepping on the mats with us in longmont but no matter where they started, they are all part of the 10th Planet Family now.

So many great athletes, so many great stories of people refusing to give up and continuing to push despite, set back after set back. We are still a very young team but we are creating warriors one practice at a time. We now have a lot of colored belts on the mats in every class and they are all doing their part to raise the level of the team as a whole.

This was an amazingly rewarding promotion for me. When Jacob showed up for his first class he wound up puking in the grass outside the dojo. I didn’t know if I’d ever see him again but he was back on the mats the next day. He is one of the smaller guys in the gym but he never turns down a roll, regularly rolling with guys who outweigh him by more than 60lbs.

He entered his first tournament in January of 2025 after only four months of training. He went 0-4 losing every match. A lot of people would have hung it up right there but not Jacob. He jumped right back into the fire two months later and again went winless at Fight 2 Win but again Jake just refused to give up and competed again the following month and this time took bronze winning two matches by submission. After getting his first wins in comp his confidence improved and he started really believing in himself. The change was tangible.

Jake’s tenacity and mental toughness is truly remarkable and the beautiful thing about an attitude like that is that it gets results. Now Jake is genuinely hard to kill, he’s got a dangerous guard, and today he became a 10th Planet Blue Belt. Be like Jake! Show up, give it your all, don’t become discouraged, and a few years down the line you’ll have real skills that hold up in competition. Congratulations Jacob, you’re the man!

Today during our open mat I had the pleasure or promoting David Grigsby to 10th Planet Purple Belt.
Dave used to train with me at my Denver gym but moved to the mountains. As soon as the Longmont school opened he was@the first to buy a membership. He has been a dedicated student of the game, he is a great training partner, an avid competitor and one heck of a tough roll.

Congratulations Dave on all your progress. You are a true asset to this team and I feel lucky call you a friend.
