They took a deep dive into Appalachian history and culture—trying their hand at traditional spinning and crocheting, exploring local wildlife up close with a hands-on pelt demonstration, and even getting the teachers in on the action for a flintlock demonstration! 💥

Join us for a historic weekend as we honor and remember the 240th Commemoration of McNitt’s Defeat—the worst defeat on Boone’s Trace. Bring the whole family out to experience living history, honor those who fell in October 1786, and stepped back in time!

📜 SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
🍂 Saturday, October 3rd
All-Day Living History Camp: Step into early frontier life with demonstrations of period cooking, spinning, sewing, and camp activities!
Musket Firing Demonstrations: Watch period weapons displayed and fired throughout the day.
Evening Remembrance Walk (at dusk): Take a solemn walk along the original Boone’s Trace to the site of the defeat and the graves of the victims, featuring a memorial ceremony.
Night-Time Honor Guard: A 12-hour guard posted at the cemetery overnight to honor the fallen.
🕯️ Sunday, October 4th
8:00 AM: Commemoration volley fired at the cemetery by the guard.
11:00 AM: Period Church Service.
12:00 PM – 3:00 PM: Living History Camp resumes.

What an incredible turnout at the Mountain Life Museum this past Saturday for our 3rd Annual Appalachian Craft Fair! 🎉 We officially lost count at over 1,000 visitors!

A massive thank you to all of our amazing demonstrators and to everyone who came out to celebrate and experience true Appalachian history and culture with us.

Tomorrow is the big day! 🏔️✨ Join us from 11 AM to 7 PM as over 20 talented artisans bring history to life with live demonstrations of traditional Appalachian crafts. From master blacksmithing to intricate whittling, you'll get to see heritage skills handed down through generations right before your eyes.

🛍️ Looking for a unique keepsake? All of our amazing artisans will have one-of-a-kind handmade items available for sale, so you can take a true piece of Appalachian craftsmanship home with you!

Parking right by the Mountain Life Museum fills up fast, but don't sweat it! Hop on the free park trolley from any main parking lot within the park, and it will drop you off right at our doorstep.
