David Marshall “Carbine” Williams invented the short-stroke gas piston behind the M1 Carbine—the light .30-caliber rifle GIs carried across the Pacific, Korea, and Vietnam. MacArthur called it “one of the strongest contributing factors in our victory in the Pacific.”
Born 1900 in Cumberland County, NC. Died 1975.

David Marshall “Carbine” Williams built his first semi-auto rifles in a North Carolina prison shop from tractor axles, fence posts, and leftover steel. Two ideas he sketched in solitary—the floating chamber and the short-stroke gas piston—later showed up in C**t pistols, Re*****on .22s, and, most famously, the M1 Carbine.
Wi******er’s team finished the gun. His piston made it work. More than six million were produced in WWII alone.
Complicated man. Lasting design. His workshop now sits inside the North Carolina Museum of History.

Born in Wilmington, NC, in 1915, he grew up learning the woods and waters from his grandfather, then carried that same clear-eyed curiosity to the African bush.
His books—Horn of the Hunter, The Old Man and the Boy, Something of Value—still crackle with life, humor, and the honest weight of the hunt.
Ruark lived large, wrote larger, and left stories that feel as alive today as they did in the 1950s.
