Since August 1, Colorado's SB25-003 requires a safety course and a state card before you can buy a semi-automatic rifle or shotgun with a detachable magazine, or a gas-operated semi-auto pistol. ARs and AKs are NOT banned — but there's now a process in front of them. Here's the whole thing, start to finish:

1️⃣ CREATE A CPW PROFILE
A free profile in the Colorado Parks & Wildlife fi****ms training record system. Your background check, your card, and your course completion all attach to it.

2️⃣ SUBMIT A BACKGROUND CHECK
A third-party, name-based check — this is separate from the check we run at the counter when you actually buy.

3️⃣ GET YOUR SHERIFF'S ELIGIBILITY CARD
A sheriff's office verifies you and issues the card. You are NOT limited to the county you live in, but each office runs its own process and sets its own fee — check before you drive. Good for 5 years.

4️⃣ TAKE THE COURSE — THIS IS THE PART WE DO
In person, with a sheriff-verified instructor. No online option. If you don't hold a verified hunter education card it's 12 hours across two days; if you do, it's 4. Both end in an exam you pass at 90%. Live fire isn't required by the state.

5️⃣ COME BUY
We look up your completion in the CPW system, run the standard CBI check, and Colorado's waiting period still applies — we can't transfer until three days after the check starts or until it clears, whichever is later.

💰 AND HERE'S THE PART WE ADDED
All August, finish the course with us and we put store credit on your account toward any Specified Semiautomatic Firearm:
• 12-hour course → $100 credit
• 4-hour refresher → $30 credit

We didn't ask for this law and we can't waive it. What we can do is teach the class, walk you through every step above, and hand part of it back.

Already own one? Nothing changes. SB25-003 doesn't touch possession — this is only about buying.
