Hard to believe I have been a personal trainer for 7 years now! When I passed my test and started working in a gym I had all kinds of ideas about what it would be like, and it's no surprise that I was wrong about a lot of it. :)
1. Everyone is unique in body, personality, history, and experiences. Which means they all need something different in the gym.
2. Everyone is a survivor of something - we are all human and we all need a little kindness in our lives (okay, I already knew that one. ❤️)
3. A lot of people are afraid of the gym. Some have had bad experiences with trainers. I've heard "They always made me throw up.", "They wouldn't listen and I hurt myself", "They didn't understand my side effects.". Some people are just afraid of moving wrong or hurting themselves.
4. I grew up in a family that didn't watch a lot of sports, and my small little family now doesn't watch a lot of sports either - but wow! I think I'm in the minority there. Most of my clients have favorite teams or players and that is how they have fun with those they love. It's fun to hear about the things my clients like; books, dancing, collecting fancy scarves, taking care of animals, hiking, biking, volunteering, church activities, hockey, traveling, concerts, and much more.
5. Most people don't know how to breathe correctly - and many people have no idea what their body is doing. And no wonder, with so many people in survival mode, we learn to ignore our bodies signals. I've taught many people how to trust their body again and to feel safe while they slow down and breathe.
I could write another whole post on what I've learned about being an entrepreneur and running my own gym. Life is a journey and if we aren't learning and growing, what are we even doing?
It's my honor to be in your corner. I've learned a lot from my clients along the road too and I'm looking forward to many more lessons.

It was a great day for the at Wash Park, put on by Cancer League of Colorado.
We had some great conversations and really enjoyed the beautiful views of the park. I have hopes that we can wipe out cancer one day, and in the meantime find treatments that don't take so much from us. And we need research to do so.

What a special honor to be invited back to . Every retreat is a wonderful experience, but being able to provide some hope and a new light on exercise after cancer to a group of survivors who are also Deaf or HoH is extra special. I enjoyed sharing some tips to prevent lymphedema, introducing the group to Isak the troll, and a beginner friendly workout. These ladies were so kind and joyful; and very patient with my limited ASL.
When your job is to help breast cancer survivors trust their bodies again in the setting of the Rocky Mountains, is it actually work? I'm so blessed.

My favorite chest opener. If a full foam roller feels too intense, you can do this on a half foam roller or even the floor. I like to spend a little time with arms bent to get the pec minor and arms straight for pec major. Find the sweet spot, your body will tell you. Breath is slow in your belly. Sometimes I have to tell my body to just calm down and stop guarding. You can see that moment at the end of the video clip (unless insta cuts me off, lol).

"How was the weight"? Or put another way "How many more reps do you think you could do?"
I ask this to see if we are hitting intensity, see if you feel confident under the load, and to make sure you are not experiencing any pain.
Sometimes women are nervous to answer, because they think I'm going to give heavier weights. (My love language 😉) Sometimes that's the right thing, and sometimes it's not. We work on it together. This isn't bootcamp!

All of these quotes are from MCL athletes, either to me, or to another teammate. And they fill my soul! I love hearing about the work showing up in real life, and I love witnessing a community come together and celebrating one another. It would be easy to compare, but that is not the MCL way. Everyone is on their own journey and moving past cancer. I love it. I love it!

Calling all my cardio fans - run or walk at Wash Park. The course is friendly to all ability levels, plus you get to come say 'Hi' to me. ☺️Look for the pink tent - I'll be raffling off a free Survivor Stronger(er) class and some 1:1 personal training sessions.
