Our Q2 Metrics Report includes a new level of analysis: racing-related fatality rates by surface type.

🟨 Dirt: 0.93 fatalities per 1,000 starts (28,934 starts)
🟩 Turf: 1.41 fatalities per 1,000 starts (9,213 starts)
⬛ Synthetic: 0.40 fatalities per 1,000 starts (2,478 starts)

While HISA has not yet determined whether the data reflect persistent trends or quarter-specific variation, by establishing baseline data across surfaces, conditions and race types, we can better identify patterns and target future safety efforts.

AFib in Thoroughbred horses is a leading cause of exercise-associated sudden death. We're working with researchers nationwide to study the condition and develop guidance for trainers and veterinarians on the best approaches to treating horses experiencing AFib.

Throughout the month, we'll be sharing special content on AFib prevention and what you can do to help. Stay tuned!
