You know how when you get on an airplane or take a cruise, you get the hear the "safety briefing?" Believe it or not, it is not only federally required, but it is IMPORTANT.

AND, it is something you need to do for your guests who haven't been on your boat. It doesn't have to be as perfect as the stewardess on Delta, but you want to tell your guests things like WHERE the lifejackets are, where you keep the throwable, the location of fire extinguishers, and even (REALLY) the basics of how to operate the boat.

When you are looking to put your boat into a slip, the key is SLOW. Period. (just wanted to make the point) A pivot turn is going to be a great option, using the push and pull mentality - remember, a pontoon only turns by being pushed or pulled from the rear. With that in mind get used to the STEER BEFORE YOU GEAR idea. It is your friend. Lots of neutral, and small, slow bumps into gear to get it around.

Be mindful of where your wind is, and how it will impact your dockage. SLOW is the game - BUT power is the way you defeat the wind or current.

In a crossing situation, where you have a boat coming from your port (left) side, THEY are the "give-way" meaning that by law, they are to turn to their starboard (right) and go in behind you. You also have a job, it is maintain course and speed.

Obviously, if you have a boat to YOUR starboard, you are the give-way vessel.

Remember, that is up to you - and EVERY boater to do everything reasonable to avoid a wreck on the water.

When you are putting together your docking plan, get your dock lines prepped as well. Take the closed loop of the dock line, and put it through the middle of the cleat on your boat - FROM THE WATER SIDE - then wrap it around the horns. Be sure to tuck the like a little so it can't fall out of the boat and get it wrapped around the prop.

There are rules of the road out on the water, and often there is a wrong way and a RIGHT way! When approaching a boat bow to bow, both boats should steer to the starboard (right), and pass like you would on the road.

Boating Boot Camp: When you are accelerating or decelerating your boat, using a fluid up and down will help you maintain better control, and will decrease your chances of sumping the boat with water coming over the transom.

Here is another knot you ought not not know - Round Turn and 2 Half Hitches

Here us another quick knot from someone who is NOT a Boy Scout, but it is useful, for sure. The Clove Hitch is a great tie, but it can break without tension. With this guy, the two half hitches will help you keep it locked.

It is useful from tying to docks, boat fenders (or bumpers), and even camping. The cool thing is it holds under tension, is easy to untie, and doesn't slip.
