California Republic SUP

California Republic SUP I’m still a wealth of SUP knowledge and still in the area. But, no longer in business. This is our last summer in business! Weekly rentals are $225 for 2 boards.
(240)

After 15 wonderful years of serving the standup paddleboard needs of the good people of Lake Murray, South Carolina, founder Steve has decided to call it quits. It will be a dramatically reduced offering this summer. We are no longer operating out of Southshore Marina like we have since 2012. Nor do we have any weekend paddling, only Monday - Thursday afternoons and by reservation only. Basically, we will be holding 5 weeklong summer camps. Afternoon paddling after that will be available at the location where camp will be held. Additionally, there will be 5 Ladies Nights at the same location. Here is our 2025 summer schedule:
June 2 - 5 @ Irmo
June 9 - 12 @ Irmo
June 16 - 19 @ Irmo
June 23 - 26 @ Shealy's Landing in Ballentine
July 7 - 10 @ Dreher Island State Park
------------

THURSDAY nights, 6 - 8 pm LADIES NIGHT, $25
*RESERVATIONS REQUIRED - Text Steve at (803) 608-5033

No more weekend paddling offered! Sorry, it's been a great 15 years!

---------------
COST: Paddleboards rent for a two-hour paddle from the locations listed above. If you would like to rent paddleboards at these locations, please call or text the day before (24 hour notice please). $25

DROP-OFF RENTALS can be arranged anytime. We drop off two paddleboards at your location if you live on or near the lake. $75 for 2 boards for 24 hours. SALES: Don't forget, we also sell paddleboards. Most are also in the rental fleet. So, you can rent one, see if you like it, and then arrange to purchase a brand new one just like it. It will be delivered to your home, set up and inspected by Steve. We sometimes sell our used fleet of boards at the end of the second summer of their use. So, there are generally not any used boards for sale, just new ones. But, it doesn't hurt to ask!!

They’re STILL doing it!! I saw two different ads showing people, after receiving their “expert instruction”, paddling with PADDLES BACKWARD! So, I stopped in there today to ask them about it. The kid at the counter listened intently to my question. Before I could even get it out, he began to shake his head left and right. “I don’t know why they keep doing that,” he said, exasperated!

SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 -

Seems like too solemn of a day to make my normal Aloha Friday post. So, I went back to where I was 25 years ago to reflect. I thought of the hour delay I had in learning that tragic news while I was on my bike on the way to school.

So much has changed since that day. Most of my teaching career has been spent addressing that day as a current event. An article in today’s newspaper makes the point that now it is a historical event that is taught to students who were not alive at the time of the cataclysmic event.

What are your memories from 25 years ago today? 🇺🇸

As luck would have it, I am heading out to California again, the week AFTER a huge swell hit the Pacific shores, thanks to Hurricane Marie. I’m hearing it is the biggest surf in 10 years.

You may have been seeing footage on the news of The Peninsula, in Long Beach. I can’t express to you how unusual it is to have ANY waves whatsoever break here. There is a complicated series of breakwalls that protects this beach from breaking waves and erosion.

In my lifetime, I have only seen breaking waves here twice. I surfed there both times. When every other place is breaking out of control and unsurfable, this area produces pleasant, easy to ride waves.

I included a photo I took of my mom in 2013 of this exact spot. The others were all posted yesterday. Twenty homes have been evacuated and serious erosion is taking place.

The life of a surfer - you hope for big waves, then this shows up. 😳
