You wouldn’t know it by looking at him now. 🥋
Neo was a little unsure about coming to class in the first place. That’s normal, that’s most kids. But watch this video. That’s not a kid who’s unsure about anything. That’s a kid who showed up, did the work, and earned his white belt with a smile the whole time.
That’s the part parents don’t always expect. The hesitant kid and the proud kid in this video are the same kid, just a few weeks apart.
This is day one for Neo. We can’t wait to watch the rest of it.

West Coast World Martial Arts - Leander
Where confidence, discipline, and fun come together.
North Austin’s premier family martial arts school helping kids ages 4+ build life skills through martial arts.
That’s not just a pad drill. 🥋
Watch what happens when the instructor adds pressure on purpose. Timing gets tighter. Breathing gets controlled. Every strike has to mean something because they’re building power, not just throwing punches.
That resistance on the pad is teaching them something a rule book never could. How to stay calm when things get hard. How to push through instead of shutting down.
Same thing happens in real life. Someone applies pressure, they know how to respond instead of react.

Your kid says they’re too tired. Nine times out of ten, they’re not tired. They just don’t want to.
Same as school. Same as brushing their teeth. Same as bath time. Nobody’s excited about any of that in the moment. We make them do it anyway, because we can see fifteen years down the road that they can’t.
Here’s the part most of us skip though. It’s not just “because I said so.” Acknowledge what they’re feeling, hold the line anyway, and then actually tell them why. One sentence. Not a lecture.
That’s the difference between a kid who obeys and a kid who understands.

The parents in the background are the whole point of this video. 🥋
Watch these students in the middle of conditioning. Arms shaking, still grinding out push ups, still got reps left to go. And that’s exactly when the room picks them up. Every parent on their feet, clapping loud enough to fill the whole room, pushing them through the part where quitting looks real good.
That’s not us hyping up a test. That’s a community not letting a kid quit on themselves.
Because in the hard moments, on the mat or off it, everyone needs someone in their corner. That’s what we’re building here. Not just better martial artists. A place that shows up for people.

Freeze tag with a twist. 🥋
We call it Banana Invaders. Kids are moving, running the drill, having a blast. Then someone gets frozen and has to hold it, balance, control, no wobbling, and freeze like a banana. A classmate comes through and gets them unstuck by peeling the banana so the game keeps going.
Looks like chaos. Really it’s body control, balance, and listening skills getting drilled in without the kids even realizing it.
Sometimes after a long day, kids just need to move and have fun. This is how we sneak the hard stuff in while they’re doing exactly that.

Look at this group. Every one of them just passed Black Belt tryouts. 🥋
Tryouts don’t lie. You can’t fake your way through them. What we watched yesterday was months of extra reps, corrections, struggles, and showing back up ready to fix what they got wrong. That’s discipline you can actually see.
We are extremely proud of this group🥺
But passing tryouts and earning the belt aren’t the same thing. That’s the part that matters right now.
Today we celebrate. Starting tomorrow, training picks back up and it’s going to get harder before test day. Test is in October, and we’ve got real work between now and then.
Let’s go get it. 🥋

Kids aren’t testing you because they’re bad. They’re testing you because they’re smart.
Every warning that doesn’t turn into anything teaches them something. Not that you’re an easy parent. That the rule was never really a rule.
We see it on the mat constantly. The kids who struggle most at home usually aren’t lacking discipline in general, they’re just used to standards that bend. Give them one that doesn’t, and something clicks fast.
Follow through isn’t the boring part of parenting. It’s the part that actually builds the habit.
Consistency beats volume every single time.

7am on a Saturday. Sticks in hand. Nobody’s thrilled to be here.
That’s the point though. These are our black belt candidates, putting in extra reps before most people are even up, because tomorrow they walk into tryouts. Tryouts decide whether they’re ready to head to California and test for their black belt in October.
Nobody wakes up wanting to train at 7am. You do it anyway, and that’s exactly what builds the discipline that carries you through everything else, on the mat and off it.
Years of showing up. Years of setting the goal and chasing it. Tomorrow’s the last step before that work pays off.
Send these guys some encouragement below, they’ve earned it!

Balance. Precision. Nerve.
This is one of those drills that looks simple until you’re the one doing it. Sidekick through the ring, no room for error, no room to muscle through it either.
Every rep forces them to slow down, find their center, and commit to the technique instead of rushing it.
That’s the thing about precision. You can’t fake it. Either the kick is clean or it isn’t.

Beat the Alligator. 🐊
Two pads, one gap, and a kid trying to get their hand in and out before it closes.
Watch this student in the video. Speed’s way up from where she started. But the real progress isn’t the hands, it’s the head. She is not panicking anymore. Not rushing sloppy just to beat the clock.
That’s the part parents don’t see coming. We tell them it’s a speed drill. It’s really an anxiety drill wearing a costume.
Fast hands come from a calm mind, not the other way around.
