πŸ₯‹ The hardest things you do are often the things you’re most proud of.

After dedicating a decade to sports Wushu and Kungfu forms, I spent another decade earning my black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. But I still felt like I was missing an essential component of martial arts.

So I set out to earn a black belt in β€œThe Strongest Karate,” Kyokushin Karate. πŸ₯‹πŸ”₯

After 20+ years of martial arts, some of the skills I had developed didn’t exactly transfer to Kyokushin. πŸ˜‚ My floppy broadsword, killer guard game, aging body, and old injuries made competing pretty daunting.

I’ve never really enjoyed competition, and Kyokushin was no different.

But ironically, it became one of the most rewarding parts of my martial arts journey. πŸ’ͺ

It taught me that winning and losing ultimately don’t matter as much as knowing you gave everything you had.

If I prepared as hard as I could, stepped onto the mat, faced the challenge, and gave my best, I could walk away proud of myself regardless of the result.

That’s the lesson I hope I can pass on to my students. ❀️

Martial arts isn’t just about learning how to fight. It’s about learning how to face difficult things, give your best, and become someone you’re proud to be. πŸ₯‹πŸ”₯

Looking at this list brought back so many great memories. ❀️

I’ve literally enjoyed reflecting on the good times with each of these special individuals, remembering the years of training, competitions, performances, friendships, challenges, laughs, and accomplishments we shared together.

Some have continued training and pursuing their martial arts journey, and it is an honor to watch them continue striving for greater growth and mastery. πŸ₯‹πŸ”₯

Others moved on after high school or began new chapters of their lives.

What I hope is that every one of them carries the memories, lessons, friendships, discipline, confidence, and experiences from their martial arts journey with them for life. ❀️

Earning a black belt is about so much more than learning martial arts. It becomes a part of your story.
