Pink Lemonade has a rather unusual history, in that there are a couple of stories that to this day are not completely vetted. Both stories are from the circus and thus the historical association with the two things are intertwined. First account dates back to 1857 and some red dyed water being used to make the lemonade and apparently the color was a hit. Fast forward to 1912 and another circus claiming the beginning of pink lemonade coming from red cinnamon candies being dropped into the vat. Interestingly the first printed record was in a West Virginia newspaper in 1879, so that math seems to perhaps clear this up! While these early versions were dyed, it is much more common to use a red colored fruit such as strawberry, raspberry, cranberry, currants, or cherries. Today there is such a thing as a “pink lemonade” lemon however, the yellow and green striped skinned fruit with pink pulp ironically squeezes out clearer than its normal lemon counterparts.
