Let’s be honest, family. What’s the biggest myth sports parents believe?
I’ll go first: that a full athletic scholarship is the norm.
The truth? Less than 1% of high school athletes receive one. That financial gap catches so many families off guard, and most don’t see it coming until they’re already deep in the recruiting process.
So if you work in college athletics, education, or counseling, I want to hear from you. What’s the most common misconception you see sports families walk in with?

Let me say that again for the parent in the back.
Your child does not have to be the star to get a scholarship.
I know that’s not what the highlight reel culture tells you. I know it feels like if your kid isn’t getting the most points, the most yards, the most attention, then the door is closed.
It is not closed.
I have watched coaches pass on the flashiest player in the room to recruit the kid who showed up early, stayed late, kept their grades up, and made everyone around them better. Every single time.
Because here is what coaches know that a lot of parents don’t yet. They’re not just building a roster. They’re building a locker room. And a locker room full of coachable, consistent, character-driven athletes wins championships.
So if your child is putting in the work quietly, showing up without being asked, respecting their coaches and teammates, and handling their business in the classroom, they are already doing the things that get recruiters to look twice.
Your job right now is to make sure the right people see it.
