Your first instinct at the kitchen line should be to take the ball out of the air.
You know how you can immediatly tell you’re not doing that— one of your feet will take a small step back…
That tiny step back says that your instinct wasn’t to take it out of the air — it was to let it bounce.
In pickleball, if you’re truly ready to take the ball out of the air, your feet should stay parallel to the kitchen line so you’re balanced, athletic, and maximizing your reach.
Foot back = less reach.
Parallel base = full extension and control.

I used to rush to the kitchen line after every third shot! 😅 Here’s what changed my game: I started watching my opponents’ paddles instead of just running forward.
If their paddle is dipping down after my third shot, I know I can come forward safely. If it’s up high, I definitely stay back and wait for a better opportunity.
And here’s my return strategy: I always aim for the back fourth of the court. This gives me maximum time to get set at the kitchen line AND makes their third shot way harder!
When I see a speed up opportunity, I’m taking it - but I’m not just hitting it anywhere. I have specific targets I’m aiming for to win the point.

Ever find yourself flicking your wrist on every d**k and then wondering why the ball keeps popping up?
I used to do this ALL the time and it made my d**ks so unpredictable! Here’s my little pickleball secret: keep your grip loose but your wrist firm.
Let your shoulder and forearm do the work, not your wrist! It helps your game so much and totally eliminates those pop-ups at the kitchen line.

Want better volleys? Stop trying to hit the ball so hard 🙅♀️
The biggest mistake I see is taking way too big of a backswing. The best volleyers don’t rely on a big swing—they rely on great positioning, clean contact, and a compact motion.
Try this 3-step progression:
1️⃣ Catch the ball. No paddle. Just have a partner toss balls to you at the kitchen line. You don’t need a backswing to catch a ball, and that’s exactly the feeling you’re after.
2️⃣ Bump it back. Grab your paddle and simply block the ball back to your partner. No swing—just a controlled bump.
3️⃣ Add acceleration. Once that feels natural, add a small forward acceleration through contact. That’s where you’ll develop a clean, compact counter volley without ever taking the paddle back.

If your drip keeps sailing long or sitting up, it’s probably not your timing…it’s your mechanics 👀
The biggest mistakes I see:
⬇️ Not getting the paddle tip low enough before contact
🎾 Contacting the middle of the ball instead of the lower hemisphere
🌪️ Missing the topspin (and sidespin) that makes the drip so effective
Think of the ball like it has an equator around the middle. To create that aggressive dipping shot, contact the bottom half of the ball and brush up, even slightly around the outside to create some sidespin.
Master those three things, and your drip will become more consistent, more aggressive, and much harder to attack.

Want a drive that has shape & dips right at your opponents feet? Do these 3 things 👇
1️⃣ Split step the moment your opponent contacts the ball
2️⃣ Load your back foot to generate real power
3️⃣ Brush the bottom side of the ball on contact — that’s what creates the dip
Follow through with your momentum driving forward. That’s what separates a weak push from a drive that actually does damage.
