Here you learn Hawaiian surf tradition. Kuleana (responsibility) for the kai, and haʻahaʻa (humility) to learn from kūpuna who’ve known Maui longer than you.

IS THIS HOW YOU GRANDMA??

I became a grandma at 39 years old. My daughter married someone with a daughter and this little girl ran to me with open arms yelling “Grandma!”

One of my life’s values is “There is no such thing as other people’s children” so after looking around to see who she could possibly have been talking to, I told her, “Okay, listen kiddo, I will be your grandma, but I don’t bake and I don’t sew and I don’t even know what crochet is. But if you would like to climb mountains and ride horses and surf and hang glide, I’m your girl. We just have to rework the branding on the whole “grandma” thing cuz cuz yikes 😬 .”

And so my career as a Tutu (grandma in Hawaiian) was born. Being Katie’‘s grandma is one of the great joys of my life!

Naturally when she came to Maui I treated her to the coolest experiences on the island: surf lessons in Lahaina with the descendants of royal Hawaiian bodyguards and powered hang gliding in Hana with the most experienced pilot anywhere.

Thank you for making me a grandma, Katie. I hope I’m doing a good job for you! Ilysm!
