Is your child or teen on a swim team, or are they interested in joining one?
For me, coaching swimming has never been only about improving a stroke or getting a faster time. My background is deeply rooted in youth development, and I bring that experience to the pool.
I focus on helping young people develop confidence, persistence, discipline, and a growth mindset. We work on proper stroke technique, efficiency, endurance, starts, turns, and the skills they need to become stronger competitive swimmers. But I also want them to understand that progress comes from being willing to work, make corrections, and keep going when something is difficult.
One of my favorite examples is Gnarley. When I began working with him at age 10, he did not know how to swim. We worked together three days a week, and he worked incredibly hard. Within a year, his freestyle had developed into a smooth, technically strong stroke, and he earned a place on the swim team. From ages 11 through 15, he went on to earn first-place finishes in both freestyle and breaststroke.
Then there’s Greyson. I began working with him when he was in fifth grade. At the time, joining the swim team wasn’t even on his radar. When he reached seventh grade, I encouraged his mom to consider having him try out. He did, and today he is competing successfully and earning first-place finishes in freestyle and breaststroke within his division.
Those stories are different, but the lesson is the same: sometimes a young person just needs someone who sees what they’re capable of, teaches them how to get there, and expects them to put in the work.
If your child or teen is preparing to try out for a swim team, already competing and wants to strengthen their technique, or simply needs more confidence in the water, I’d love to work with them.
