🚂⚾ COULD THE 86ERS BE CHOO-CHOOING INTO KINGMAN? ⚾🚂

As the Wichita Independent Baseball League begins looking toward possible expansion for the 2027 Summer Season, Kingman, Kansas is certainly getting our attention.

And Kingman already has something every baseball town needs — a real ballpark.

George Arensdorf Memorial Field at Riverside Park features permanent grandstands, covered seating, a press box and lights, and has a history of hosting baseball in the Kingman community.

That could make for a pretty good home for a team we're having some fun developing — the KINGMAN 86ERS.

The 86ers name reaches back to 1886, an important period in Kingman's early development and railroad history. Naturally, an 1880s steam locomotive has become part of the proposed club's identity.

Nothing is official. There's track to lay and plenty of work ahead before the WIBL's 2027 plans are determined.

But don't be surprised if someday next summer you hear something coming down the tracks...

WIBL LOOKING AHEAD TO 2027 ⚾

The Wichita Independent Baseball League is already looking ahead.

While the 2026 Fall Season will mark the first official season of the WIBL, preliminary work has already begun on possibilities for an expanded 2027 Summer Season, including bringing WIBL baseball to additional communities outside Wichita.

Two communities currently being explored are Newton and Kingman, Kansas.

Newton has a long and colorful baseball history, making it a natural community for the WIBL to explore. Kingman is another exciting possibility, and we've begun developing the identity of a potential Kingman 86ers club. The 86ers name pays tribute to 1886, an important year during Kingman's railroad-driven growth and development. The club's proposed identity features an 1880s-era steam locomotive and celebrates the community's Kansas railroad heritage.

Nothing has been finalized. These are prospective 2027 clubs and locations, and there is plenty of work to be done before either becomes official.

But this has always been part of the vision for the WIBL — build a strong foundation in Wichita, create opportunities for adult baseball players, and eventually take league baseball into surrounding Kansas communities where local teams can develop their own identities, histories and fan bases.

Why the Kingman 86ers?

The Kingman 86ers name pays tribute to 1886, a pivotal year during Kingman, Kansas' remarkable period of growth.

The railroad first reached Kingman from Wichita in June 1884, immediately bringing new settlers, passengers, freight and building materials into the community. Then, importantly for the 86ers name, another railroad line reached Kingman from Hutchinson in 1886. Kingman's population rapidly grew to approximately 2,000 during this railroad-driven boom.

The year 1886 is also preserved through historic maps and a flourishing local newspaper industry, providing a remarkable snapshot of a young Kansas community being transformed by transportation, commerce and expansion.
The Kingman 86ers name celebrates that important chapter of Kingman's history while creating a distinctive baseball identity for a new generation — honoring the past while building something new.
