TLC Barrel Horse Training started in 1992, with one goal in mind, help a horse and a rider become the best team they could be! Tina Spangler has won many titles over the years:

I have ridden horses for over 40 plus years and started competing in barrels and poles at the age of 8. I have been professionally training horses and coaching since the early 90s. My success with many horses that I own, trained and competed on and 1600 clients over the last 29 years has given me unique knowledge & an education of a lifetime. I was born in Southern California, lived in Colorado 8 years where TLC started in 1992. In 2001 TLC Barrels moved to Florida where I currently reside. Some of the titles I have earned over the years are: 1994 Top 3 Novice Horse Program, 1995 District Champion NBHA 2D, 1995 Top 5 round 1D NBHA State Championships, 1997 NBHA Colorado year end champ 2D, 1997 C&L Winter Buckle Champion, 1998 NBHA Year End Champ & Top 5 1D Title, 1999 Top 5 Year End District Finalist 1D & 2D, 1995-2000 NBHA World Qualifier in 1D & 2D, 2003-2007 1D wins over 250 entries, 2007 Novice Horse 1D Reserve Champion Tour of Champions, 2009 Tour of Champions Top 3 2D Novice Horse and Top 3 Futurity 1D, Top 3 Derby, 2010 1D Derby Reserve Champion Tour of Champions, 2011-2016 NBHA World Qualifier 3 slots. 2018 1D NBHA Senior Champion, 2019 1D Res Champ NBHA Seniors, NBHA FL06 3D Open Champion & 1D Senior Reserve Champion. What to do if your horse won't back out of trailer?

A great way to teach backing off a step up trailer is making sure your horse backs up every where else first.

For instance can they back off light energy, or a light cue in an open area? What about through a barn, off cement aisle, through a stall door as good as in the open area?

In this case the horse had been backing fine for a couple years out of the trailer both with a ramp and a step up/off, although cautious owner says the first step out.

So my 1st question is always, "What's changed?"

In his case there was not accident or scary incident known to owner, but the horse was trimmed short by a new farrier 1 day before and all hooves sore. Also, he was sore in his back and hips.

I had chiropractor out to adjust and magnawave, kept using my massage machine and after a week of hoof growth I added backing, ground work and riding again:

Here is where we backed:

In open areas
Off cement in barn
Barn stall door
Trailer just front feet
Trailer all 4 feet

After 1 week he is already doing better and we will do a little each day after each ride.

I added a massage machine a few times a week to keep him loose too.

He got some chill grazing time with me after for being a good boy!

My goal will be he gets more confident backing out of trailer over next couple weeks.

He is here for barrel pattern training, but we work with the horse we have today and that is what he needed.

When a horse changes, no matter what it is, on the ground or in the saddle, always ask yourself, what has changed? They don't want to be bad, it's just their way of telling us they are sore, scared or don't understand what we want.
