🚴‍♂️ Recommended Bicycle Maintenance Interval 🚴‍♀️🚴‍♀️

👍We are asked these questions almost every day 🛞
Service intervals vary based on riding conditions, mileage, weather, and bike type, and rider strength, these are good general guidelines for a multi-speed bicycle.

🚴‍♀️A well-maintained multi-speed bicycle can provide decades of reliable service.

🪛 Service Item 🪛 🔧Recommended Interval🔧

Tire pressure check - Before every ride, the most common reason for punctures is low pressure

Chain lubrication - Every 100–150 miles (160–240 km), or after riding in rain. Use a drip-type lubricant application (especially with disc brakes)

Clean drivetrain - Every 200–500 miles (320–800 km), or after riding in extreme dusty or muddy conditions

Check brakes and shifting - That happens just by riding the bike; take note how the bike is shifting and how the brakes feel

Inspect wheels and tires - Monthly (at a minimum)

Measure chain wear - Every 500–1,000 miles (800–1,600 km)

Hub, headset, and bottom bracket service - Every 1–2 years, more often in wet or dusty conditions or for high-mileage ridersger riders wear out chains faster

Replace cassette and chainrings - As wear dictates

Replace brake pads - When worn; inspect every 6 months

Replace cables and housing - Annually or when shifting/braking degrades

Wheel truing and spoke tension check - As needed

Hub, headset, and bottom bracket service - Every 1–2 years, more often in wet or dusty conditions or for high-mileage riders

A professional tune-up once every couple of years or as needed

🛞For gravel and mountain bikes🚴‍♂️
If you're riding in mud, extreme dust, water crossings, or events like Unbound Gravel, cut many of these intervals in half. A muddy or extremely dusty ride will require:
• Immediate bike wash
• Drivetrain cleaning and lubrication
• Drivetrain wear check

🛞For occasional casual riders🚴‍♀️
Even if mileage is low, plan on:
• Chain lubrication every few months
• Check tire pressure before every ride, all bicycle tire loses air overtime
• A professional tune-up once every couple of years or as needed.

The dust has settled (not much dust this year), the mud has dried, and the cleanup has begun. 🚴‍♂️🧽
Another epic Unbound Gravel race, The bikes are coming in coated with Flint Hills "peanut butter mud," worn drivetrains, and plenty of stories from the road. Whether you conquered your distance or simply survived the conditions, congratulations on taking on one of gravel cycling's toughest challenges.

Time for a thorough wash, an ultrasonic spa day for the drivetrain, fresh lubrication, and a close inspection so you're ready for the next adventure. You and your bike earned it!

Thinking about all the riders tackling Unbound Gravel today in the Flint Hills. Overnight rain and heavy morning downpours have turned the legendary gravel roads into the infamous "peanut butter mud"—a thick limestone and clay mix that clings to everything it touches.

Bikes are packing on pounds of sticky mud, drivetrains are struggling, and every mile is a battle. These are the conditions that test determination as much as fitness.

Stay safe out there, keep moving forward, and remember: the toughest days make for the best stories. 🚴‍♂️💪🌧️
