Classify the parts of the week you want to go well and the parts of the week that don't have to be as epic.
It'll help you manage your training fatigue and mentally get around not being 100% all the time.
Here's the structure:
'A' Workout = Most Important. Sometimes it's a race.
'B' Workout = Don't stress on this one. Just get it in and if you feel good... GREAT!
'C' Workout = Maintenance and Support. Skip it if you're not feeling totally recovered.

Meet Adam!
Adam Hurley
Adam joined KCE in January 2019. At the time, he was already a seasoned marathoner with roughly 11 marathons under his belt and one big goal: breaking the 3-hour barrier.
Adam was consistently putting in 60+ mile weeks across six days of running, and the hard work started paying off. He ran several sub-19-minute 5Ks, broke 40 minutes for 10K, and ran a 1:25 half marathon before finally achieving his sub-3 goal at the Indianapolis Marathon in 2021.
And he wasn't done there. Just a few months later, he took on the Boston Marathon and ran an incredible 2:57:25 on a much tougher course.
A knee surgery about a year ago put things on hold for a while, but Adam has been steadily building back for several months now. I'm excited to see what this next stretch of training brings, and I'm confident he's going to have a really strong fall.
One of the things I appreciate most about Adam is how hard he works. He's the kind of guy who will help you out in just about any situation, he's patient, and he always seems to bring a great attitude regardless of the circumstances. He's been a great part of KCE for a long time, and I'm really glad he's still here.
Thanks for being part of KCE, Adam! We're lucky to have you.
"But the schedule says..."
Feeling like garbage for several days in a row, unable to hit paces, and something aches. 🤷♂️
That's a solid indication of being under-recovered. Time to dial it back for a bit and aim at sleeping and eating more to feel better.
Once you get it under control, then gradually start raising mileage again. (I like to aim for 5 extra miles every 3rd week to play it safe).
It's good to be consistent with a plan, but if you're not feeling great most days of the week, it's not working.

Meet Kate!
Kate Brockway
Kate joined KCE in the fall of 2023 with one goal in mind: running the Leadville 100. At the time, she was still relatively new to running, but she wasn't afraid to dream big. Before discovering running, Kate was a collegiate swimmer at Western Kentucky University, so she's no stranger to large amounts of work.
Long story short, Kate didn't get into Leadville, so she shifted her focus to the Lincoln Marathon, and that change of plans couldn't have worked out much better. She ran an incredible 3:22, and I think that's when she really got hooked. Since then she's continued to improve with a 3:11 at the Kansas City Marathon the following fall, a 3:07 at Boston, and then an outstanding 3:01 at the 2025 Chicago Marathon. The quick improvements show there's more coming.
What makes Kate especially impressive is how consistently she trains despite a busy schedule. Between traveling frequently for work and being a mom, she finds a way to get her runs done, often on her own and in some of the hottest parts of the day. She brings a bright, positive energy. If you've ever run with Kate, you'd find her to be tough and able to press a pace, but she has fun with a challenge. I think she genuinely enjoys training. It's been so much fun watching her continue to raise the bar on herself. I'm so glad to have her running with KCE and where the next race will take her!
Thanks so much for being here, Kate!!
