Stories from the people who helped build City Gym: Cheryl

“I worked at City Gym from 2011 to 2022!

“I still love City Gym so much! My 5am crew was such a solid bunch of good people that I loved seeing each morning! I remember standing outside in the parking lot in the freezing cold during Covid teaching that dedicated crew and loving that we could keep the connection during such a weird time!

“I learned how to be a good person at City Gym. Seeing the love and care that Katie and Laura exude for the people around them inspired me to be more open and loving and accepting.

“Being gone, I miss the people most of all. I miss my group exercise peeps, the other trainers. Everyone.

“I currently live in Columbia, Missouri and I love it! Noah is 6 now and heading to kindergarten on Tuesday! He’s a smart little dude and I can’t wait to see how this year goes for him. I manage and train at a gym called MET-Fitness Believe it or not, I found another gym full of amazing people! I run a Bone Health program there helping women in their 60s, 70s and 80s get stronger bones through strength training. It’s a very rewarding experience.

“City Gym, I miss you!”

Stories from the people who helped build City Gym: Josh

“I started at City Gym as a personal trainer when the doors first opened and trained my last few clients up until just over six months ago. It’s crazy to think how many of us were packed into just the south side of the gym in those early days.

“Over the years I trained clients, helped run one of the best bootcamps in the CG parking lot, led small groups and helped onboard new trainers.

“I’ll forever be grateful to Hailee for creating a place that changed my life in so many ways. I was a single dad when I started, so my oldest daughter Kirra practically grew up at City Gym. I met my wife there, built relationships with incredible people and learned how to build a business. Then Hailee and I launched Fit Truk there.

“Now, I miss the members, my coworkers and especially training my clients, many of whom I trained for more than 12 years. It still feels strange waking up and not driving to City Gym every morning.

“These days my focus is Fit Truk and it’s growing and evolving faster than ever. In June we built a 53 foot mobile gym for Jelly Roll to take on tour and we’re now working with several other artists on trailers of their own. We recently closed our first international sale, are working on projects with several major brands and are launching an experiential marketing division focused on building and activating mobile fitness vehicles and trailers.

“A lot has changed since those early days on the south side of City Gym, but so much of what I’m doing today started right there.”

Stories from the people who helped build City Gym: Katie

“I started at City Gym as a member, signing up the weekend the gym opened in August 2011. I saw a sign that a new gym was opening, and I decided to check it out. Our kids were young so I was working out at the YMCA for the daycare, but I needed something more as I was going to turn 40 soon! Hailee greeted me when I walked thru the doors for the first time and we chatted, she gave me a tour and I was hooked. I remember going home and telling my husband, “Wow, that new gym in Waldo is really nice and the owner is so genuine and kind, I joined!” And as you might say, the rest is history. I was a member for 5 years before applying for the General Manager job in 2016.

“I was a faithful 5:30am member for the first 5 years, rarely missing a class which were first taught by Hailee and then Ian. My old job had me working some crazy hours but if I was at work late the night before, I would still get up for the 5:30am class and then go back to bed. I never wanted to miss a class! I thought they would be looking for me if I wasn’t there (which was true!)

“City Gym is so much more than a gym and it has played that role in my life for 15 years now. The people are like family, the staff keeps me on my toes and the workouts keep me sane. ;-)

“Brian and I live in Brookside in my grandparents’ house. Our oldest, Charlie, is 24 and just got engaged to Kaitlin and we are so excited for a Fall 2027 wedding! Marykate is 21 and a senior at Quincy University. We love live music, Colorado vacations, family time and checking out breweries.

“Yay City Gym for 15 years of being just what I need!”

August 20, 2026

I remember the week before we officially opened. I would work all day in the space—organizing, placing equipment, finalizing membership software, and cleaning what was still partially a construction zone (because construction is always delayed, am I right?!).

Then I would go home, lay on the floor of my kitchen, and cry.

The tears came from a place of fear and overwhelm. I had risked so much to follow this dream. I had asked people I barely knew to trust what I was building. I was terrified of failing. Terrified of letting people down.

Lying there on that kitchen floor, I would ask myself over and over:

What if people don’t come?
What if people don’t stay?
How can I do this alone?

Then we opened.

That first week, I sold memberships, gave tours, cleaned, organized, and tried to keep everything moving. And to my surprise, people showed up.

They signed up.

They were excited to get started.

That first week quickly became a year. And I learned something I could never have understood before we opened:

People would come.
People would stay.
And I would absolutely not be doing this alone.

City Gym was born from the belief that a gym should be more than a place to work out. It should be a place to belong.

Fifteen years later, that belief has become so much bigger than I ever imagined.

We’ve been voted Best Of many times. We were featured in a Google commercial that aired during the ESPYS and was seen by more than 2.1 million people. We’ve watched members fall in love, get married, start families, and been witness to friendships that have lasted for years.

We’ve celebrated incredible wins together.

And we’ve weathered some incredibly hard things together, too.

COVID was the hardest.

At a time when being inside, breathing hard, and touching things could be dangerous, we worked relentlessly to create a space where people could still safely show up for themselves and for one another.

Stories from the people who helped build City Gym: Kate

“I started with City Gym right after Hailee opened the doors, 15 years ago. I was looking to get away from corporate fitness, where I started my career. Within minutes of meeting Hailee, I knew I was in the right spot. Even when I had to step away for personal reasons, City Gym and her community stood by me and held the door when it time to come back.

“I have 15 years of memories, clients, and friends. Through it all, CG has been and remains a deeply supportive community for me and my whole family. My 84 year old mother feels at home and cared for here, Hailee was our son Paul’s first trainer, and that took patience. Followed by Josh and Tom Teter. This is where his fitness journey began when he was tripping over his own feet. Hailee and CG have played a critical role in professional and personal life. Always offering support in whatever phase of evolution I am navigating. When I walk through the doors 15 years after my first meeting with Hailee, I can feel the memories of all that has unfolded, friends who have come and gone and others who have just arrived.

“Building community is not a goal or a business plan, it is an experience of nurturing culture day in and day out, where the words are truth not a slogan; be fit, be well, belong. You don’t give up on your dream or your community because things get hard. That’s where you dig in deeper - Hailee, Katie, and the team held all this together through COVID. They were a constant when we all needed something to feel stable and strong. the City Gym community is more than people to work out with. This team has built an enduring spirit that stands strong in her values. Unshakable.

“Even when I needed personal time, I knew CG would be there when I was ready. Not just because I believed it, but because Katie and Hailee made sure I knew it, that I was supported and held and welcome on my time.
