Here's an update from BlueRibbon Coalition regarding the BLM's decision to close free dispersed camping near SR9 and Zion Nat'l Park. The areas closed include Smithsonian Butte, Gooseberry Mesa, the Sheep Bridge Road country, North Creek, and the areas off Kolob Terrace Road.

Nearly 14,000 acres of free dispersed camping outside Zion National Park are set to close under the BLM’s SR9 decision. BRC has filed a formal appeal with the Interior Board of Land Appeals, built out of the agency’s own record and impact statements from our members and supporters. Here is what ...

Thank you to nine Club members who came out yesterday to help with cleaning up the flooded ATV bridge on the Hog Canyon access trail just north of Kanab. The heavy rains last week flooded the bridge again -- that's twice this summer! Yesterday’s work crew cleared the bridge and re-established the run-offs along the hogback. Job well done! Thank you!

Thought this fire statistic for Utah was interesting. The environmentalists contend that the majority of fires and fire damage is human related. Certainly, by this stat from the DNR, that is not so in Utah in 2025. Forested areas in roadless areas are difficult to manage, and when lightning strikes, fires are difficult to fight. Comments on Roadless Rules are due September 21st. https://utah-fire-info-utahdnr.hub.arcgis.com/?fbclid=IwY2xjawUKeApwZG9mAWV4dG4DYWVtAjEwAGJyaWQRMTNzT1JKMGdwejFnbk9KTWtzcnRjBmFwcF9pZBAyMjIwMzkxNzg4MjAwODkyAAEeyXiu1YijgXWQBW03q9pziB0WasVuo90plExEtvYO6AJyntstHjQHkUpOpZ4_aem_rZHJpJ4MVvUSfl9DPh1bGw

September 19, 2026 - ATV Club Saturday ride: Big Water Smoky Mountain. Ride Leader: Tony Wright – Approximately 70 miles. Meet at the Once Upon a Time Museum East Parking lot, (just past Kanab Veterinary Hospital) US 89, 8.5 miles east of Kanab for an 8:00 AM Departure. Trailer approximately 50 miles to Big Water. All Day Ride. This ride is rated easy but since there have been some recent heavy rains, and there are several wash crossings, the current conditions are unknown. More than likely, fine. All day ride so bring your lunch.

NOTE: Tony has offered to add on an additional spur ride to Alstrom Point for those interested. This addition will add about 20 miles to the ride but the view from Alstrom Point overlooking Lake Powell is pretty dang spectacular. The route is easy and worth the ride.

Currently, the weather is looking good. Don’t forget your water, lunch, dust mask and snacks (for the ride leader!)

Here's a recent article in the Salt Lake Trib on the Roadless Rules. Over 4 million acres, or 49%, of Utah’s national forest lands are classified as roadless areas, and thus are "protected" and inaccessible for off road recreation, hunting, fire management, etc. Comments about the proposed rescinding of the roadless rules is due by September 21st. Follow the link inside the article to make your comment. This is a national rule, so for those of us in Southern Utah we frequent the North Kaibab National Forest in Arizona. Make your comments specific to the National Forest that of your choice, including how those forests have been impacted by the inability to access those areas (fires, views, hunting, ranching, etc.)

The Trump administration is one step closer to repealing the 2001 Roadless Rule and opening nearly 4 million acres of Utah’s national forest lands to road construction and logging.

Administrative access allows foresters strategic, temporary entry to remove excess fuels before fires occur and salvage usable timber after.

Head to Regulations.gov to comment on the proposed rule and draft environmental impact statement. Public comments must be received by midnight on Sept. 21.

More information will be coming soon from the USDA.

Interesting read about what the 2025 Bears Ears Monument Plan really restricted.

The Bears Ears recreation restrictions were real, they were written down, and almost none of them had been enforced yet. That gap is what lets groups defending the 2025 monument plan claim it never restricted recreation. See what the plan actually said about hiking, OHV, mountain bikes, camping, cli...

September 5, 2026 - ATV Club Saturday Ride: Nampoweap Petroglyphs on the Arizona Strip. Ride Leader: Mike Reid – Approximately 110 miles – bring extra gas. Easy Ride. AZ Tag Required. Meet in Fredonia across from the Shortstop Sinclair Station departing at 8:00 AM (Utah Time). Trailering about 30 miles to Yellowstone Road -- about 4 miles east of the cane beds road. This is a long trek across a boring desolate area of the AZ Strip to the Nampaweap Petroglyph site. If you enjoy viewing petroglyphs, these are interesting and, in my opinion, worth the effort it takes to get there. Be forewarned that there is a 1.5 mile round trip hike to see this site. All day ride, so bring your lunch, plenty of water, and some extras gas if you think you may need it.

For those coming from the Hurricane area, the turn for Yellowstone from the pavement is at N36.89726 W112.91662. Meet the group there at about 8:20 and follow to staging area.
