Zelemai Residents Stage Peaceful Protest Over Death of 17-Year-Old, Demand Action Against Gun Violence

ZORZOR, LOFA COUNTY — August 31, 2026: Citizens of Zelemai Town in Zorzor Administrative District, Lofa County, on Monday staged a peaceful protest in Zorzor City, demanding action from local authorities following the death of 17-year-old Kpana Wolobah Sali, whose body was discovered in a nearby village days after he reportedly went missing.

The protesters marched to the compound of the District Commissioner, where they presented a series of suggestions and recommendations aimed at preventing similar incidents and improving security in Zelemai Town.

Kpana was reportedly last seen alive on Wednesday, August 19, after leaving home without clearly stating where he was going. His family became concerned when he failed to return.

According to information previously provided by his grandmother, Oldma Krubo Gbawoi Sali, Kpana had left home that morning. One of the last people known to have interacted with him was Madam Krubo Koiquoi, who said Kpana arrived in her village, Yugbala, with her son, Oldman.

Madam Koiquoi reportedly told authorities that Kpana ate with them before informing them that he was going to another part of the village to search for bush meat. He subsequently left and did not return.

Following reports of his disappearance, Zelemai Town Chief Sumo Kota on Friday, August 21, called on local youths to join the search for the missing teenager while district authorities and national security agencies were contacted.

The search continued until Saturday, August 22, when Liberia National Police Commander Inspector George B. David, accompanied by the Criminal Investigation Division commander assigned to Zorzor District, traveled to Zelemai to begin an investigation.

A 15-member search team was subsequently constituted to assist in locating and examining the body.

Yarkpazuo Sonuku, spokesperson for the search team, said preliminary observations suggested that Kpana may have been shot by an unknown person or persons. He claimed the team observed approximately 52 suspected bullet marks on the teenager's body.

However, authorities have not publicly identified any suspect, confirmed the cause of death through a formal forensic examination, or established a motive. The investigation remains ongoing.

Residents Present Security Demands

During Monday's peaceful protest, residents presented several recommendations to District Commissioner Hon. Paul Kalama, calling for stronger measures to protect residents and prevent the use of fi****ms in Zelemai Town.

Among their major recommendations, the citizens called for:

- Anyone found responsible for the killing of Kpana Wolobah Sali to be barred from entering Zelemai Town.
- The use of fi****ms in Zelemai Town to be prohibited, except where legally authorized for official security duties.
- Authorities to strengthen security measures in and around the town to protect residents.
- A thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Kpana's death and for anyone found responsible to face the law.

Receiving the recommendations, Zorzor Administrative District Commissioner Hon. Paul Kalama said the concerns raised by the citizens had been well received and would be carefully considered.

Commissioner Kalama also praised the residents for choosing a peaceful approach to express their concerns.

He said the decision by the citizens to march peacefully and present their recommendations was commendable, adding that it demonstrated their willingness to seek solutions through dialogue rather than violence.

According to Commissioner Kalama, he will provide a response to the citizens by Friday, September 4, 2026, after meeting with relevant authorities to discuss the recommendations and determine what actions can be taken.

The peaceful protest comes amid an ongoing investigation into Kpana Wolobah Sali's death, with residents continuing to call for justice and improved security in Zelemai Town.

Security authorities have yet to publicly announce any arrest or identify a suspect in connection with the teenager's death.

The investigation continues.
