Happy Labor Day.

Today, while we talk about workers, unions, wages, dignity, and the history of the American labor movement, I want to remember something often left out of that history: Dancers were there too.

During the Great Depression, dancers organized alongside workers. The New Dance Group, founded in New York in 1932, performed at union gatherings, demonstrations, marches, community spaces, and picket lines. Their dances confronted hunger, unemployment, racism, fascism, war, and exploitation.

And they weren't interested in keeping dance inside elite institutions.

Classes cost 10 cents. Within a year, the New Dance Group had more than 300 members. Dance wasn't sitting politely on the sidelines of the labor movement. Dance was inside it.

During the Depression, the federal government even employed dancers through the WPA's Federal Dance Project. Dancers got paid work in performance, choreography, and teaching with wages of $23.65/week in the 1930's 👀

Nearly a century later, we are very comfortable talking about what dance gives us: culture, beauty, community, tourism, education, entertainment. But we are much less comfortable talking about the workers who produce it. Because dance has an economy.

A performance creates work for theaters, technicians, musicians, photographers, designers, administrators, hotels, restaurants, transportation, marketing, and more.

And somewhere in the middle of that economy is a dancer or choreographer, often working project to project, piecing together multiple jobs, without the healthcare, retirement, paid leave, or stability we recognize as victories of the labor movement.

There is something strange about an economy being generated around an art form while the people whose bodies and ideas generate it remain some of the least economically secure people within it.

At SBD, we think about this constantly. We are an arts organization, yes. We are also an employer of creative labor.

Dance doesn't exist outside the history of labor. It is part of it.

So today, Happy Labor Day to those whose work happens in factories, hospitals, classrooms, restaurants, farms, offices and construction sites.
And yes, rehearsal studios too!
