The 2017 Money in the Bank Ladder Match officially began taking shape on the May 23, 2017 episode of SmackDown Live. Commissioner Shane McMahon announced AJ Styles, Shinsuke Nakamura, Dolph Ziggler, Sami Zayn, and Baron Corbin as the initial participants in that year’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match.

United States Champion Kevin Owens interrupted the announcement and argued that he deserved a place in the match. Owens pointed out that he had successfully retained the United States Championship against AJ Styles at Backlash just days earlier and believed that victory should have earned him an opportunity to compete for the Money in the Bank contract. Shane McMahon ultimately agreed with Owens and officially added the United States Champion to the match.

More importantly, it was their first time AJ Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura shared the ring since their fantastic IWGP Intercontinental Championship match at New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Wrestle Kingdom 10 the year prior on January 4, 2016. 🔥

On March 18, 2020, Jon Huber, formerly known as Luke Harper in WWE, made his surprise debut for AEW on an episode of Dynamite. After joining AEW, Huber returned to the ring name he had previously used outside of WWE: Brodie Lee.

He was revealed as “The Exalted One,” the previously unseen leader of The Dark Order. Following his introduction, Lee joined and the lead the rest of the faction in attacking SoCal Uncensored.

On the May 6, 2020 episode of Dynamite, AEW World Champion Jon Moxley defeated Frankie Kazarian in singles competition. Following the match, members of The Dark Order attacked Moxley, Kazarian, and the other members of SoCal Uncensored, Christopher Daniels and Scorpio Sky. The attack led to the arrival of Mr. Brodie Lee. With The Dark Order surrounding the ring, Lee confronted Moxley and challenged him to a match for the AEW World Championship. Moxley accepted the challenge, officially setting up a championship match between the two at Double or Nothing.

On May 23, 2020, Brodie Lee faced Jon Moxley for the AEW World Championship at Double or Nothing. Despite Lee’s impressive undefeated run, Moxley successfully defended the championship. The loss marked Lee’s first defeat in AEW and ended his undefeated singles run. It also became his only AEW World Championship match before his passing on December 26, 2020. 🕊️

On May 30, 2010, Prince Devitt and Kota Ibushi entered the 2010 Best of the Super Juniors tournament where they both eventually made it to grand finals. In the final, Devitt defeated Ibushi to win the 2010 Best of the Super Juniors tournament. The victory earned Devitt a future opportunity to challenge for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship, then held by Naomichi Marufuji. Just six days later, on June 19, Devitt received his championship opportunity at Dominion 6.19 where he defeated Marufuji to win the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship for the first time in his career.

On September 3, he successfully defended the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship for the second time when he defeated DDT Pro Wrestling representative, Kenny Omega. Omega and Kota Ibushi, who competed together as the Golden☆Lovers, challenged Devitt and Ryusuke Taguchi of Apollo 55 for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship on October 11.

On October 11, at Destruction ’10, the Golden☆Lovers defeated Apollo 55 to capture the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship. During the match, Ibushi pinned Devitt, giving the Golden☆Lovers the victory and setting up their Wrestle Kingdom V match for Devitt’s IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship. 🌟

CM Punk’s history WWE Championship reign continued as he successfully defended the title against a number of top contenders, including Alberto Del Rio, Dolph Ziggler, Mark Henry and Chris Jericho. Punk also found himself repeatedly defending the championship against Daniel Bryan.

Their first major singles match took place at Over the Limit, where Punk successfully retained the WWE Championship against Bryan in a match that ended under controversial circumstances. The feud continued, eventually leading to another championship match at No Way Out, where Kane was also involved.

At the center of the situation was AJ Lee, Bryan’s former girlfriend. After Bryan ended their relationship, AJ’s actions became increasingly unpredictable, as she developed an interest in both CM Punk and Kane while continuing to show that she still had feelings for Bryan. Punk and Kane both questioned AJ’s stability and her motives, particularly because of her complicated history with Bryan. Following No Way Out, Bryan earned another opportunity at the WWE Championship by defeating CM Punk and Kane, securing his rematch with Punk for the title at Money in the Bank.

In the weeks leading up to the pay per view, the match became even more complicated when AJ Lee was announced as the special guest referee for the championship match. Then, immediately before Money in the Bank began, WWE.com announced that the WWE Championship match between CM Punk and Daniel Bryan had officially been changed to a No Disqualification match. 💔

On May 1, 2026, House Of Glory Wrestling held their second Los Angeles show of the year, titled “Glory At The Globe!” On the show, 5150 defeated The Mane Event, Thunder Rosa took on Brittine Brooks, Zilla Fatu defending his HOG Crown Jewel Championship against Lance Anoa’i and Charles Mason defending his HOG Heavyweight Championship in the main event against Jonathan Gresham.

In the opening contest of this match, an epic dream match was held. It was The Amazing Red vs. AEW’s “Speedball” Mike Bailey! 🔥

The very first chapter to this iconic feud began back on December 12, 2015, over 10 years ago. PWG held its All Star Weekend 11 event and on top of the strong lineup, was Kenny Omega and Will Ospreay, where Omega would defeat Ospreay in a very fun precursor match to next set of three epic matches they were about to have in NJPW and AEW.

On January 4th, 2023, New Japan Pro Wrestling held its Wrestle Kingdom 17 event and one of the co main events, perhaps the biggest match any fan was talking about was the sequel - Omega v. Ospreay II. This time, for the IWGP United Statea Championship. Ospreay would once again lose to The Cleaner and in the process, lose his title. The match would be rated 6.25 Stars out of 5 by Dave Metzler of the WON. Later in the year, at the AEWxNJPW joint show, Forbidden Door, on June 25, the third match of the trilogy would take place. Through the help of Don Callis and a screwdriver, Ospreay would finally for the first time in his career, pick up a win over Omega and regain his US title. Metzler would give this a full 6 stars.

Fast forward to 2026, Will Ospreay won the 2026 Owen Hart Cup by defeating Swerve Strickland in a rematch of their 2024 AEW World Championship bout at Forbidden Door. With the victory, Ospreay earned a shot at the AEW World Championship at All In. After losing to MJF at Double or Nothing, Kenny Omega defeated MJF at Beach Break to win the AEW World Championship in what was his final opportunity to challenge for the title. Omega’s victory set up the fourth chapter of his series with Ospreay, this time for the AEW World Championship at Wembley Stadium. 🪽🇬🇧

On April 20, 2016, Pentagón Jr. and Rey Fénix faced off against each other in their second ever televised singles match, taking place at the mythical and world famous Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan. This bout occurred under the banner of THE BEGINNING, the opening chapter of Oudou-Pro Wrestling, a Japanese professional wrestling promotion led by the legendary Akebono. The event itself was designed to establish Oudou’s identity on the global stage, and bringing in two of the most dynamic luchadores of their generation was a great move. Pentagón Jr. and Fénix were invited as representatives of AAA Worldwide Wrestling and Lucha Underground, two promotions that were helping redefine modern lucha libre at the time. The chemistry between the two brothers was undeniable, built on years of shared experience and brotherly bond. In the end, Pentagón Jr. managed to secure the victory over Fénix, closing the match to sustained applause from the Korakuen Hall crowd in this hidden gem. 👌🏽🐦‍🔥

At WrestleMania 31 on March 29, 2015, John Cena defeated Rusev to capture the United States Championship for the fourth time in his career. Cena had not held the United States Championship since 2004, his first reign with the title in more than a decade. The match also ended Rusev’s undefeated streak on WWE’s main roster, as Cena became the first wrestler to pin him since his arrival on the main roster.

The following night on the March 30 episode of Monday Night Raw, Cena introduced a concept that would become one of the defining parts of his 2015 run: the United States Championship Open Challenge.

Cena announced that he would defend the United States Championship against anyone who was willing to step up, turning the title into a featured part of Raw on a weekly basis. The first Open Challenge took place that night against Dean Ambrose, which was the only singles match between Cena and Ambrose in WWE. From there, the Open Challenge continued to produce a series of competitive matches against a wide variety of opponents, including Stardust, Bad News Barrett, Kane, Sami Zayn, Neville, Zack Ryder, Kevin Owens, Rusev and Cesaro.

The Open Challenge also gave the United States Championship considerably more attention. Each week, viewers had a reason to tune in and see who would answer Cena’s challenge, while the matches themselves regularly received significant time and focus on Raw. For years, Cena had been subjected to the familiar “You Can’t Wrestle” criticism. Throughout the Open Challenge series, however, he consistently delivered strong television matches with different opponents and demonstrated his ability to work effectively with a wide range of wrestling styles.

The Continental Classic is an annual round robin tournament, first established in 2023 by AEW that is similar to NJPW’s G1 Climax. It features 12 wrestlers divided into two six man groups known as the Blue League and Gold League. Competitors earn points throughout the tournament based on their match results, with the goal of advancing to the final stages and ultimately becoming the Continental Classic winner.

For this edition of the Continental Classic, reigning Continental Champion Kazuchika Okada received an automatic entry into the tournament. The Gold League consisted of Kazuchika Okada, Kyle Fletcher, Darby Allin, “Speedball” Mike Bailey, Kevin Knight, and PAC. The Blue League consisted of Konosuke Takesh*ta, Orange Cassidy, Claudio Castagnoli, Máscara Dorada, Jon Moxley, and Roderick Strong.

The opening round of matches was scheduled for the November 26 edition of AEW Dynamite, the Thanksgiving Eve episode. The first Gold League matches featured Kazuchika Okada against Kyle Fletcher (in a rematch from the previous year’s tournament) and Kevin Knight against Darby Allin (who Jack Perry ended up replacing after Allin was legit injured after the match). Meanwhile, the opening Blue League matches saw Jon Moxley face Máscara Dorada and Claudio Castagnoli take on Orange Cassidy. 🌟

After successfully defending the IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship at NJPW’s Historic X-Over, Will Ospreay’s post match celebration was interrupted by a video message from AEW’s Kenny Omega.

Omega addressed Ospreay’s rise in New Japan Pro-Wrestling and questioned whether Ospreay had truly been the right person to carry on the position he had occupied during his time in NJPW. Omega made it clear that he did not believe Ospreay had been a suitable replacement for him and then revealed that, following a call from NJPW management, he had decided to return to the company after being away for four years.

The match was widely praised by fans and wrestling critics. Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter awarded the match a 6¼ star rating, placing it among the highest rated matches of their respective careers.
