A fun day by the pool can change in an instant. That's why water safety starts long before anyone gets in the water.
Formal swimming lessons help swimmers build confidence, strengthen essential safety skills, and prepare for the unexpected.
Even if your child knows how to swim, ask yourself: Are they a strong swimmer?

Confidence in the water is important, but supervision is irreplaceable. π
Even strong swimmers can become tired, distracted, or find themselves in an unexpected situation. Water safety starts with swimming skills, but it doesn't end there.
A watchful adult is one of the most important layers of protection, every time you're around the water.

Many parents spend time researching life jackets, swim lessons, and pool fences, but one of the simplest water safety considerations is often overlooked: visibility.
No single safety measure is enough on its own, but together they can make a big difference. π
Looking for another layer of protection this summer?
Give your child the confidence, skills, and water safety foundation that can last a lifetime! ππ

For autistic children, water safety can look different than many families, schools, and communities expect.
Even children who avoid baths or swim lessons may still be drawn to pools, ponds, lakes, canals, or other nearby water. And when a child with autism goes missing, one message can make all the difference:
Search nearby water first.
In our next AngelSense Live panel, weβre bringing together voices from advocacy, policy, clinical care, and lived parent experience to talk about what real water safety planning needs to include - beyond βwatch them closelyβ or βsign them up for swim lessons.β
Youβll hear from:
π§ Lori McIlwain of the National Autism Safety Council, on why water risk can look different for autistic children and what families and first responders need to know.
π§ Stacey Hoaglund of Disability Advocacy and Support Specialists, on access, equity, swim instruction, legislation, and why drowning prevention is also a disability-access issue.
π§ Melissa Schiefelbein, BCBA and Clinical Lead at AngelSense, on how families can build realistic safety plans around behavior patterns, communication needs, elopement risk, sensory needs, and assistive technology.
Moderated by Rick Loewenstein, this conversation will focus on practical, layered protection families, providers, educators, and policymakers can actually use.
