Holding back tears, a young grandmother said this to us as she dropped off her granddaughter to class. The 13 year old recently lost her mother and father in a horrific act of violence and the grandmother lost her daughter. She said this to us as if the norm was not caring or at least indifference. It made me sad to think that this is how so many feel, especially when they have faced trauma. To those that step through our door, I want you to know that we do care. Believe me, if we didn’t, I would have given this up a long time ago. We cheer our students successes. It makes us smile and puts a pep in our step. We also feel the sometimes unbearable grief of our students when they are struggling. I’ve come to realize that relational trauma is real and affects us too. We can feel the weight of our students suffering in our bones as we wish that we could wave a magic wand to make everything okay. It gets heavy at times but we know that there are opportunities for healing, growth and a chance to change how the story ends. Those are the things that keep us cheering on our students, and I guess in a way ourselves. So yes, we care. We see you. We hear you and we are rooting for you. 🙏💜
