August 2026 marks 32 years since we lost our beloved Vadyar, Swamimalai K. Rajaratnam.
In 2021, for his 90th birthday, his wife, Nagalakshmi Mami, had asked me to put together a celebration in his memory. Then the pandemic happened but it also gave me the opportunity to create something that has stayed with us for posterity. I recorded 10 episodes of the podcast ‘Dance Conversations ’ with my mentors, collaborators, colleagues and guru bahens.
On his 90th birthday, we released this episode bringing together many voices to remember the teacher, musician, mentor and human being we knew as Vadyar.
This August, I return to those conversations with gratitude - to Vadyar for all that he gave us, and to everyone who shared their stories and helped keep his memory alive. Remembering Vadyar, Swamimalai K. Rajaratnam. A legacy carried forward, one memory at a time.

Over the decades, Arpana has taken pride in looking beyond the boundaries of Bharata Natyam, beyond the Indian diaspora, and even beyond dance itself, embracing art and culture as a means of building bridges between communities.
Our newest collaborators are the enthusiastic, talented, and remarkably responsive young dancers of the Pan American Chinese Dance Alliance (PACDA). It has been a joy working with them, and their director Cheer Pan has become a dear friend whose warmth and commitment to cultural exchange we deeply value.
Our joint presentation for the participants of the Taoli World Dance Competition, held at the beautiful Irvine Barclay Theatre, was received with tremendous enthusiasm. It was equally gratifying to see our young assistants, Avanika Prasad (ADC grad 2025) and Samana Nadig (ADC grad 2024) contribute with dedication and professionalism.
