Next week marks the 100th anniversary of the disaster at Pabst Mine G shaft. Several events will commemorate the anniversary.

On September 22nd, the Iron County Historical Museum presents Bill Jamerson for “Life in the Location: Songs and Stories of Michigan’s Iron Miners” at 6pm.

A roundtable discussion with Bruce Cox, Ivan Hellen, and longtime friend of WJMS Larry Peterson Will be held at the Ironwood Carnegie Library on the September 24 at 6pm.

Tours of the G and H shafts will be conducted on Saturday, September 26 from 1-3 pm, beginning at the Bonnie St. trailhead in the Miners Memorial Park.

On the evening of September 26, a special presentation, “Echoes From the Eigth Level” will be held at the Ironwood Memorial Building featuring hymms and a benediction. Bill Jamerson will present songs and stories. Ivan Hellen will offer a historical presentation. A video of a radio play written by Ray Maurin will be shown as well as a documentary produced by TV6-Marquette.

Join with the community as we commemorate this historic event that drew national attention to Ironwood.

The Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa is calling on Gov. Tony Evers to declare a state disaster following last month’s Line 5 natural gas liquids spill in Iron County.

The tribe is also asking the state to revoke permits for Enbridge’s 41-mile reroute around the Bad River Reservation.

The Wisconsin DNR is asking Enbridge to stop work on a temporary Line 5 bypass near Saxon, saying the company began construction without the necessary state approvals. The bypass is being built near the site of last month’s natural gas liquids leak in Iron County.

Enbridge is temporarily pausing construction on its Line 5 reroute following last week’s natural gas liquids leak near Saxon.

The 48-hour safety stand-down comes after the Wisconsin DNR asked Enbridge to halt construction until the leak is resolved and steps are in place to prevent future spills.

Line 5 remains shut down as crews continue working at the site of the leak.

Fundraising continues for designing and building the trail.

We are pleased to share that we are within $500 of raising the $175,000 needed to purchase the Soo Line railroad grade between Hurley and Montreal! A new anonymous donor contributed $25,000 this month, bringing us up to the finish line. Once the City of Hurley owns the railroad grade, ICORE will lead the effort to design and build the new 3-mile trail, eventually extending the Iron Belle Trail west to Montreal. To get a jump start on trail construction, yet another anonymous donor is offering a NEW MATCH CAMPAIGN! They will donate up to $15,000, matching donations through September 2026. Except for the final $500 to purchase the land, all new donations will be used as local match for grant applications to design and build the trail.
